Slamball or volleyball?
Posted by devo on December 22, 2009
One of the sites that I check out occasionally is Loris Bertolacci’s Sport, Health & Fitness blog. Loris always talks passionately about his topic. Somehow I missed this post; it’s worth a read.
Come on you guys. Wrest the initiative from the AFL and get kids to play Volleyball in Western Sydney. Paul Roos would be rapt! Before someone gives Lote another million to play Rugby League and Demetriou starts brainwashing newly born babies in Western Sydney get in there! I hear that every new baby born in Western Sydney will be given a Sherrin.
The men’s Volleyball team won the Asian Championship last year and is a great team. There are some awesome and spectacular athletes playing.
Someone has to realize that the one constant in life is change and there are some sports that simply are global and some that are not. Take the punt.
Get rid of slamball and put Volleyball on the screen and sponsor it. Go on. Do it! read the full post

Women’s National Volleyball Association for USA
Posted by devo on December 21, 2009
A revolution is on the horizon in the world of team sports as the Women’s National Volleyball Association (WNVA) fills the vast void between the exceptional popularity of volleyball nationally and internationally and the absence of the indoor game as a professional sport in the United States. more
Thanks to Ross Sullivan for the heads up on this as he heads home after 5 1/2 months of volleyball overseas.

Volleycamp Announces January Camp
Posted by devo on December 21, 2009
Looking for something different for Christmas? Why not suggest to mum or dad that they enrol you in the next Victorian Volleycamp?
The first camp for 2010 will be held on January 23, 24 & 25 at St Bernard’s College in Essendon.
Volleycamp is an ideal preparation for state team trials and the new volleyball year. The camp is NON-residential, so interstate and regional athletes need to organise to stay with a friend. The very successful MASTERCLASS will again be offered for elite athletes who have already achieved a degree of success. The 2010 Volleycamp enrolment brochure is now available from the Volleycamp website – www.volleycamp.com.au.

National talent identification
Posted by devo on December 18, 2009
AUSTRALIA’S best 130 junior volleyball players are training in Bendigo this week for the Australian Institute of Sport’s junior development camp … with the aim of earning a place in the Australian junior squad …
National Talent Identification and Development Coach and Junior Women’s Program Manager, Simon Naismith, said the athletes at this week’s camp had been selected based on their performances throughout the year. “We’ve got talent identification scouts out throughout Australia through Volleyball Australia whose prime job is to go out to state schools and competitions and under-16 championships to find athletes to bring to this camp,’’ he said. … “They will have fantastic ball control, which is really important, as well as playing an international style of game,’’ he said. “… we need true athletes out there.’’ more@BendigoAdvertiser

2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League
Posted by devo on December 18, 2009
Pool E
The situation seems luxurious, at least at a first glance. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN has already booked two victories and not against easy opponents. With two three-setters against Italian champion CoprAtlantide PIACENZA and Greek vice-champion Panathinaikos ATHENS, the German lead the standings in Pool E after two legs. “We started better than we all might have expected“, says Stelian Moculescu, head coach of the German team. “Until now everything worked really well. But that is no guarantee that it goes on like this”. For the German champions the campaign continues with the second home match against JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. of Poland. Moculescu is sure: “This match will be the most difficult for us. For a lot of people a victory is obvious. But that is not true”. The Polish around their Russian star, spiker Pavel Abramov, come to Germany having finished in second place last year’s GM Capital Challenge Cup and in third place in the 2009 Polish league. Currently the club from southern Poland ranges in second position, just behind PGE Skra BELCHATOW. “JASTRZEBSKI WEGIEL does not have many big names in the team“, says Moculescu. “But this is not that relevant”. The German coach warns for the powerful services and attacks of Australians Igor Yudin and Benjamin Hardy. “Their balls are really tough”. For JASTRZEBSKI a success in Friedrichshafen would be the first victory in the CEV Indesit Champions League. If FRIEDRICHSHAFEN wins, the German top team could come quite near to qualify for the Playoffs 12. “We know that we aren’t any longer an underdog“, so Moculescu. “But we know also that we can tumble very quickly.“ more@CEV

Jim Lester Scholarship
Posted by mickmurphy on December 12, 2009
The Jim Lester Scholarship is the brainchild of the Australian Volleyball Referee Commission and at this year’s Australian Volleyball Schools Cup, three lucky young officials got the chance to win one of the scholarships on offer.
These scholarships include, return airfares to either the 2010 Australian Junior Volleyball Championships or the 2010 Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships (at the discretion of the AVRC), accommodation, meals and a per diem. The scholarship winners will each be assigned a “mentor” approved by the AVRC and will most likely be travelling from the same state to either AJVC or AJBVC.
One winner for 2009 is Cimon Lee, from South Australia.
Cimon is an outstanding young official whom will no doubt use this excellent opportunity to develop his skills as a referee.
Congratulations Cimon!!!!

Not just a blogger our Hugh
Posted by devo on December 12, 2009
Okay, it’s not volleyball, but this does deserve a mention. Regular devo’s blogger Hugh found out on the bus trip home from Schools’ Cup that his animation studio had won the Australian Film Industry award for best short animation. The Cat Piano, which is narrated by Nick Cave, is about a city of singing cats which is preyed upon by a shadowy figure intent on performing a twisted feline symphony.
Well done mate. And if the search I did on the internet is anything to go by, other, greater awards, may be on the way.
UPDATE: It’s now official
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 82nd Academy Awards®. Thirty-seven pictures had originally qualified in the category.
The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production company:
* “The Cat Piano,” Eddie White and Ari Gibson, directors (The People’s Republic of Animation) …
The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select the five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2010. more ~ more
