What’s Stelio up to?

Posted by devo on May 17, 2008

Ex-Canadian, ex-Australian men’s coach Stelio DeRocco has a talented family as this article in the Selkirk Journal points out.

Having a family member win a prestigious volleyball championship is a pretty rare occurrence. But having a father and his two sons win four different titles in the same year – in two different countries, no less – is a very spectacular feat … “Really, the pressure was on me because as the boys said, ‘It started with Mike winning it with Alberta and then Jay, the following weekend, won it with Mount Royal,’” Stelio DeRocco said proudly of the rare feat. “Like the boys said, ‘Dad, now it’s up to you. So, there was a little bit of pressure on the old man to prevail.” more

Let them play - latest FIVB board decision

Posted by devo on May 13, 2008

As we reported 3 days ago, there has been a softening in the rules to regulate foreign players in clubs. The FIVB Board of Administration has made the following announcement overnight.

Today the Board agreed on a historical decision for the Volleyball Family. “Each Club will be free to have as many players coming from other National Federations as they want, under the conditions determined in an International Transfer Certificate. Three years are given to having only two players coming from another National Federation on court at the same time and each National Federation will be able to authorize one more ITC player on court. This new regulation is the final decision after broad discussions with several National Federations and during the FIVB Board of Administration meetings,” said Dr. Acosta.

You can read the full press release on the FIVB site. The FIVB decision will still need to go to the World Conference in June. The FIVB have been very careful to not stop the employment of anyone - to not appear to be in contravention of the EU free movement of workers laws. It will be interesting to see if they have done enough to stop players and clubs taking this to court on challenge. As FIFA were told recently, any move to outflank the EU laws could potentially lead to widespread legal actions.

I think there is still a long way to go on this situation. For now, nothing changes next year.

Happy Mothers’ Day 2

We have just played our final match 3-1 (25-22,19-25,25-14,25-19), and have finished our tour with a pleasing 4-2 win ratio. This morning’s match (1000hrs) was against Makkasanpittaya, who we had played on Tuesday (Match 2), and the temperature was “slightly cooler” than really stinking hot.

This afternoon we head back to the stadium to see the tournament final between Thai Army v. Thai Air Force at 1600hrs. We lost to the Army team on Wednesday in 3, however, the feeling among the team is that if we could play them again today, such has the improvement been in our team, we really would give them a run for their money.

Yesterday, the Thailand Volleyball Association organized for the team to visit the very large and grand ‘Grand Palace’ in what could be described as really, really, stinking hot conditions. Carsten Moeller unfortunately had to ’sit’ out this tour and stay in the hotel with a case of tourist tum-tum. Jeremy Pappagallo, after sweating out the Grand Palace Tour, also decided he should return to the hotel to also ’sit ‘ out the day. We are pleased to report that both boys now appear to be on the road to recovery, with new found ability to move more than 5 meters from a bathroom! Pappagallo is again demanding food, always a good sign. After the Grand Palace the rest of the team spent the afternoon in an air-conditioned shopping mall.

In the evening the TVA hosted the team on a truly memorable and relaxing dinner/river cruise, with feature performances by James Winzar doing Thai sword fighting, and Luke Hill and Coach McCaskill showing the locals how Thai disco dancing is really done. Keep your eye on You-Tube for edited highlights.

Training again tomorrow at 1000hrs, then back to Oz in the afternoon.

HAPPY MOTHERS DAY! from the Team

Happy Mothers’ Day from Thailand

The Youth team played Makkasan (game 2 opponents) again today. They again won, this time in 4 sets after going to sleep with a handy lead in one set. Excellent stuff blocking saw them dominate for much of the match.

The boys will watch the final between Army and Navy in the Thai Junior Championships today. They will train tomorrow before flying home.

I would like to especially thank Steve Rogers, who has supplied info (often by phone) and photos through out the tour.

Let Them Play! - fivb softens stance

Posted by devo on May 10, 2008

Thanks to Sandy from Bomberino for spotting this one: Reuters India is reporting:

International Volleyball Federation eases stance on foreign quotas

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) said on Friday it had decided to soften its stance over the introduction of controversial quotas for foreign players.

The FIVB said it would now seek to have no more than three foreign players on court at any one time, rather than the original proposal of two, but said it would still resist any attempts by European Union officials to scupper the plan … Acosta said the decision to offer a “3+3″ quota rule instead of the previous “4+2″ was based on the concerns of the European associations rather than fears of EU intervention.

However, the artcle goes on to say …

On Thursday the European Parliament overwhelmingly rejected the similar “6+5″ proposals put forward by world soccer’s governing body FIFA, arguing that the scheme would “create direct discrimination based on nationality”.

(Mr Acosta says,) “There is no conflict with European labour law because clubs will still be able to sign as many foreign players as they wish. But when it comes to the number who can appear on court at any one time, that is for the sports bodies to decide. There is no judge who will rule on this in any case unless there is first a complaint … more

Oh, with all due respect Mr Acosta, there will be a complaint!

Aussies lose in 5 to Argentina

Posted by devo on May 10, 2008

Australia have pushed the number 6 world rank team to 5 sets in their final match in Argentina. In the 3 “friendly” matches, Australia lost 2 matches to 1. Argentina won the 2 “demonstration / scrimmage” matches.

Russ Borgeaud reports that it was a high quality match. Yudin top scored with 21 points. The guys head to Greece tomorrow.

From Feva:
In the most exciting match of the five played vs. Australia and with an overcrowded stadium, the Argentine National Men Team, coached by Jon Uriarte defeated the visiting team 3-2 (26-28, 25-21, 25-21, 28-30, 15-10). Lucas Chavez and Lucas Ocampo were the best players of the night closing a great friendly series that started just a week ago in Trelew and that finished with a record for Argentina of 4 victories and an only defeat.

After a very levelled start, Australia got an advantage with its best weapon, blocking. more ~ Feva photos

Kasper in Denmark - Let us play!

Posted by devo on May 10, 2008

Our friend Kasper blogs in Denmark and is kind enough to keep me up-to-date with Aussies playing there.

He recently posted on the new rules that will not only affect Aussie players, but European players as well. Kasper has been kind enough to summarise his post.

The post was basically a run through of the new proposal from the FIVB regarding foreign players. I mainly discussed two issues: 1) Will it be implemented? 2) What will the effects be in Denmark?

1) I wrote how it still has to be adopted by the World Congress plus something about the resistance that the rule change is facing. That’s where I mentioned Australia (and your blog) along with USA and Canada, as strong volleyball nations without a national league, who depend on the possibility of their players playing overseas. I also believe that there will be lawsuits (or maybe even disobedience) if they do wanna go through with it.

2) I talked a little about the effects in the Danish league if the rule is implemented. A team like Jarryd’s, Middelfart (Jarryd Christensen - Middelfart), will suffer. They have had five foreigners this season and they were the dominating players. So they will need to look for some strong Danish players, and strong, committed Danish players are hard to find, especially when you are not in a big city like Copenhagen where people come to study or work.

A few other teams might feel restricted, but most teams can play on without being too affected by the rules. But generally it would mean that the league would be somewhat weaker. Perhaps it would create some more focus on the development of Danish talent, and that’s where we might benefit from the rule.

Thanks Kasper.
