Kasper in Denmark - Let us play!
Posted by devo on May 10, 2008
Our friend Kasper blogs in Denmark and is kind enough to keep me up-to-date with Aussies playing there.
He recently posted on the new rules that will not only affect Aussie players, but European players as well. Kasper has been kind enough to summarise his post.
The post was basically a run through of the new proposal from the FIVB regarding foreign players. I mainly discussed two issues: 1) Will it be implemented? 2) What will the effects be in Denmark?
1) I wrote how it still has to be adopted by the World Congress plus something about the resistance that the rule change is facing. That’s where I mentioned Australia (and your blog) along with USA and Canada, as strong volleyball nations without a national league, who depend on the possibility of their players playing overseas. I also believe that there will be lawsuits (or maybe even disobedience) if they do wanna go through with it.
2) I talked a little about the effects in the Danish league if the rule is implemented. A team like Jarryd’s, Middelfart (Jarryd Christensen - Middelfart), will suffer. They have had five foreigners this season and they were the dominating players. So they will need to look for some strong Danish players, and strong, committed Danish players are hard to find, especially when you are not in a big city like Copenhagen where people come to study or work.
A few other teams might feel restricted, but most teams can play on without being too affected by the rules. But generally it would mean that the league would be somewhat weaker. Perhaps it would create some more focus on the development of Danish talent, and that’s where we might benefit from the rule.
Thanks Kasper.
