Mens’ AVL round 2

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

UPDATED 26 Oct:

You can now see all the results from the weekeend’s round 2 matches here

Melbourne Blues and WA share the top of the ladder with 5 wins from 8 matches. However, Queensland Pirates and UTSSU, who did not play this weekend, are in 3rd and 4th spots with 4 wins from 4 games, and are most likely to progess quickly up the ladder next round. The surprise has been the AIS, who sit on the bottom of the ladder with only 1 win from 3 matches. Training should be “interesting” at the AIS this week.

In our poll (left hand column) the punters still have the AIS to win this competition (30%) from Pirates (26%). It will be interesting to see if the AIS still maintain that position after this weekend’s results.

Men’s AVL round 2 is underway in Melbourne this weekend. Uni Blues defeated Adelaide in the first match tonight 3-1.

You can follow the matches on the Volleyball Australia site, and on the AVL page.

So the AVL is up and running and now the AVF has a little bit of info online……. still very poor i must say. I think what would be good is maybe some stats on both teams. Clearly there are large coaching groups that travel and is not hard to do them. I personally would like to see how all my fellow friends back home are playing in this newly established league

Just a thought would make it a little more professional

    Hey,

just wondering if anyone who was there is able to tell me if the games AIS lost (both in 5) were because they were off their game, or if it was simply that they were’nt strong enough?

Typically the AIS have gone through AVL with only maybe a single loss in the whole tournament, so to lose 2 of their first 3 I am just curious if they are weaker this year, or whether they just had a bad game.

Anyway, hopefully round 3 will come up with some good games with AIS, Queensland and UTSSU all coming up against each other

this is probably the weakest team the AIS has put foward that i have ever seen, i think its just mostly because all the young very skilled players have gone to play overseas so a good portion of first year schollarship holders are in the team

don’t also forget that the AIS boys just arrived in Melb on Fri after their trip in Sri Lanka, so there may be some jet lag involved as well. There is a lot of good talent in those boys. Most of them are the U19 team, bar 2 or 3 players.

.. not only jetlag but also a decent dose of “Delhi belly” i.e. traveller’s dysentery, that hit just on all in the whole team – some pretty “thoroughly”! So it was off plane from Colombo and directly down to Melbourne for most of them …

Call me a sceptic, but let’s wait and see who makes up the team come finals time. One or two returns from OS is all it will take for the AIS to win the finals. Whosin is right, there’s plenty of talent there just waiting for some more leadership. It would be interesting to see the full team list submitted to AVF for the season… I’m sure Russ wouldn’t have any hesitation handing it out.

You can see who’s been named in the squad on the O2 forms on the AVL website under competition stats. From what I can tell, and I could be very wrong, there aren’t any guys from overseas on the list… In saying that, I do reckon the AIS I will still be a very strong contender even without those guys.

The season in europe runs through to the start of next year so i can see why players would return to play in the AVL……….. being paid in europe compared to having to pay in Australia hmmmm tough one there.

Check the average age of guy playing this year and it will tell you why they may struggle or require leadership. But still some of the best talent in Australia.

Thanks for the tip Baron – I just noticed that there are still a few big names to show up for a few of the teams – should be an interesting next couple of rounds!
Big Ren – all the different teams will take different stats (if they do at all), and funnily enough, in 2007 our stats never matched the official ones for WAVL.
It would just be great to see official team lists etc rather than the backwards way to get the names (but then, would be great if the website looked professional too!)

But are these stats available online anywhere……… how hard would it be to have someone trained to sit down at the scorers table and take stats. Here in Canada the coach recieves a print out after each set with the stats. They then have to be posted within 2 hours of the final result.
Just something that could be done a little better, might even help guys with getting future contracts.

As great as stats would be and a perfect website would be – to do these things costs money. I thought everyone was complaining about how much money AVL already cost?

Speaking of the AVL website – will there be any photos of any of the games posted and who would be in charge of the AVL website?
