Not just a blogger our Hugh

Okay, it’s not volleyball, but this does deserve a mention. Regular devo’s blogger Hugh found out on the bus trip home from Schools’ Cup that his animation studio had won the Australian Film Industry award for best short animation. The Cat Piano, which is narrated by Nick Cave, is about a city of singing cats which is preyed upon by a shadowy figure intent on performing a twisted feline symphony.
Well done mate. And if the search I did on the internet is anything to go by, other, greater awards, may be on the way.
UPDATE: It’s now official
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 10 animated short films will advance in the voting process for the 82nd Academy Awards®. Thirty-seven pictures had originally qualified in the category.
The 10 films are listed below in alphabetical order by title, with their production company:
* “The Cat Piano,” Eddie White and Ari Gibson, directors (The People’s Republic of Animation) …
The Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all the eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting in screenings held in New York and Los Angeles. Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will now select the five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist. Branch screenings will be held in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco in January 2010. more ~ more

Cheers Allan, I thought coming home with an U16GH silver and U17G1 gold was pretty cool, but the AFI just topped off the night!
The awards were on just down the road from where we were staying in Melbourne and I could have gone, but I’ve found that being a Volleyball Junkie, the Bus trip back home is just more fun than sitting in a stuffy room with famous faces.

and because my profession can be weird, due to the strict rules of an award that our film may be or may not be nominated for, I cannot comment on it but everyone else can!

Damn protocol!

The rules are an ass. It’s all over the internet. Just type this into Google – “The Cat Piano” – and watch 3 million hits come up. Type – “The Cat Piano” oscar – and watch over 500,000 hits come up.
It’s not rocket science. Our boy is a step away from not just being a devo’s legend, but being a movie legend as well.

Thanks Eldo. You can ask Mark about the award I may or may not be nominated for if you’re curious.
