At the end of voting, both the AIS and the Queensland Pirates had firmed as your equal favourites (26%) to win the Men’s Australian Volleyball League for 2008.
We are all awaiting the next round where the top 3 teams, including UTSSU (19%) will play against each other. Will UTSSU show that they should be one of the favourites? Were the AIS suffering “Bali Bellie” and jet lag in Melbourne? Will the Pirates rip the national title away from the AIS?
I’ll have another poll up so that you can change your vote. Or have you already seen enough to confirm your previous vote.
See the vote results here.

UPDATED: Thanks to the fantastic email service of Phong NGUYEN at Volleyball Australia:
Volleyball Team Australia (the Australian Men’s Volleyball Team) commenced a friendly series of matches with the National Men’s Volleyball Team of Tunisia, in Tunis, this evening. At the request of the Tunisian Head Coach, the match was played as a “scrimmage match” with special scoring and the sets finishing at 30 points.
All players in the Australian Team gained court time in the first of two “scrimmage matches” with the host country. In a match where teams were required to sideout from serve receive, defend a high ball attack and then attack from a “down ball” situation, in each rotation, Australia proved to be the winners, taking the match 2-1: 27/30, 30/22, 30/22.
Australia plays Tunisia in their second scrimmage match, tomorrow evening, before two official matches with Tunisia on the 23rd and 24rd July.
The full report is now on the Volleyball Australia web site here. You can subscribe to the enews on the Volleyball Australia site

ajvc 2008
I have spent a few hours over the last two days at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships at Dandenong. Wow! A great tournament with some great volleyball action. I have particularly enjoyed watching the under 21 Queensland Boys’ team play. With an AIS front court lineup on 4 rotations, they are awesome. At times dangerous. The NSW under 19 Boys is also worth a watch for a view of the future.
It’s also great to watch the coaches in action - it is junior volleyball. Four point winning margins evapourate in seconds and then reappear. It is easy to see why so many coaches end up bald!
It was great to catch up with some interstate and international friends. That’s the best thing about being part of the volleyball community - the friendships. It was also nice to catch up with people who visit the site, and to now be able to put a face to some of the people who post comments. I also bumped into well known football player Luke Campbell - don’t worry Russ, he survived his first match with only a few bruises and caulkies!
I’ll certainly be there for the finals on Saturday. If you are a Vic, don’t miss out on this opportunity to see the future of the sport in action - State Volleyball Centre 270 Stud Road Dandenong
Check out the photos at MJR Photography. ~ Results and draw

When new New Zealand men’s coach Tony Barnett decided to cast his net wider than anyone had done in the past, Palmerston North players Soane Vaipulu and Matt Quinn found themselves discovered.
They are to play for New Zealand against the Australian Institute of Sport development team in Canberra next month.
Previously teams were chosen from the top-end players at the nationals and those who couldn’t get there didn’t get selected. Vaipulu and Quinn were picked after two months of trials involving 120 players. more @ Manawatu Standard

Correspondent Seb from NSW reports …
State League NSW: Just wanted to post that the last match for this half of State Volleyball League has finished in Sydney. SVL is going through an interesting year with lot’s of player movements. UTS, Sydney Uni and Westside have grown in quality and depth of players, while Cedars have decreased, making the comp a lot more balanced this year. Even though, glad to tell you that Cedars haven’t lost any of the 7 matches and are looking good.
You can look at these 2 links for more info: www.sydneycedars.com.au and the SVL site http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-3489-0-0-0&sID=45615
Looking for some competition: We ‘ll have 2 weeks off before the start of the second half of SVL and Cedars are planning on playing a few matches, maybe against the AIS. We were wondering if any team in Melbourne is interested in hosting a few matches? Or in coming up to Sydney to test their skills with us? Let us know.

Our friend Kasper (Website: http://www.volleyball.dk) writes from Denmark:
Hi Devo
Just wanted to make a final note on the season here in Denmark:
Jarryd Christensen was the only Aussie here this seeason. His Middelfart team came in third. A bit disappointing for them. For a long time they looked like the closest contenders to favourites Marienlyst, but they ended up losing 1-2 in the semis. Having taken the away game 3-0, they lost both home matches 2-3 to Aalborg. Marienlyst (the former team of Shane Alexander and Nathan Roberts) then beat Aalborg in the finals.
However, Jarryd was selected for “Team of the Year”, which is decided through a poll including all the players in the division.
My own team, unfortunately, was relegated. Maybe we need some Aussies!

Nittaidai University defeated The Australian Institute Sport today in Melbourne to take out the Eric Haymen Cup: 3-0 (20, 18, 21). The Tute showed some good form but failed to match the consistency in all areas of their game that was shown by Nittaidai, however, it was another opportunity for this young group of volleyballers to advance their skills.
In the warm up game the AIS, with “guest” setter Matt DeSalvo, defeated Heidelberg 3-0.

Nittaidai University from Japan defeated the Australian Institute of Sport 3-0 (19, 22, 17) in Melbourne last night. Their series stands at 1-1.
Nittaidai were very dynamic with a ”nothing is going to hit the floor” attitude. Once in front they attacked at every opportunity. The error rate of the AIS increased and it was game over. The final match between the two team is today at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong.

The Australian Institute of Sport defeated top Japanese university team Nittaidai last night in a tight 3-1 match.
In a match of contrasting styles, the shorter, quicker, more consistent Japanese team pushed the AIS on all points. The greater height and blocking power of the AIS were the deciding factors.
The highlight of the match - for me - was the on-court appearence of Zane Christensen. Zane has been out of action after carrying knee problems into the Athens Olympics. He looked a little cautious in his movements, but the big guy is back. Before injury, Zane was the most promising of the young athletes coming through the AIS ranks.
Melburnians can catch the next match between these teams at 7pm at Trinity College Saturday (yes that is a change of time), and again at the Volleyball Centre in Dandenong on Sunday. Get there if you can.
I will have some pictures of the match up when I get back to Wonnie after the weekend.
