Around the web for this last week

I haven’t had a lot of free time this last week, but here’s some of what’s been popping up on my computer:
Paul Carroll is getting some pre-season match practice with Pepperdine U ~ more ~ more
Paul Sanderson has been suspended by Brandon University men’s volleyball team. The Bobcats have taken disciplinary action against All-Canadian left-side Paul Sanderson and right-side Maverick Hatch has quit the team. … Sanderson … has been suspended indefinitely by the University and is not even being allowed to participate in Bobcats’ practice. more ~ more
Each time Christie Naumann threw the volleyball toward the roof of the Thomas Fieldhouse and soared through the air to slam a jump-serve, Michelle Kreeger just hoped. There were times she even cringed. If the ball went to the libero, the third-year East Stroudsburg coach knew the Warriors would get at least a touch on it. If it didn’t, Naumann was recording an ace. The junior outside hitter racked up a match-high six aces and added seven kills as Lock Haven advanced to this weekend’s PSAC Tournament with a 3-0 quarterfinal victory. more

Nicole into Pepperdine Hall of Fame
Posted by devo on November 6, 2008
Women’s Volleyball Olympian Nicole (Sanderson) Hannan traveled all the way from Australia to Pepperdine University to receive her award as a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee.
“Nicole traveled half-way around the world to convince me to pay for her education to play volleyball for the Waves,” said women’s head coach Nina Matthies. While at Pepperdine Hannan became one of the first players in history to earn All-West Coast Conference first team honors four times. She graduated from Pepperdine in 1997 with a degree in sports medicine. She competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics for her native Australia and finished fourth in Beach Volleyball. “I came to Pepperdine from the other side of the world and made new friends, family and teammates,” said Hannan. “Nina always believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.” more@pepperdine

european leagues
Posted by markleb on November 1, 2008
Phill asked me a while ago to rate the European leagues. This is my attempt.
There is a huge range of leagues within Europe in virtually every way. Leagues vary between (and within) countries in terms of professionalism, salaries, standard of play, standard and amount of practice, standard of resources within clubs and leagues and standard of living among other things.
Professionalism is a BIG variability. The ability of a club to drop a few hundred euros in someone’s pocket at the end of the month does NOT make the club, or the player receiving the money, ‘professional’. To me ‘professional’ means the ability to train twice a day. Professional clubs have two training sessions a day and professional players are available to train twice a day.
Standard is, of course, also variable. And comparing leagues in terms of standard is often quite difficult. You can get a pretty good idea by looking at results in European Cups, by the level of the foreign players in the leagues and sometimes also results from friendly matches between teams from different leagues. Although friendly matches are notoriously and wildly unpredictable.
I know most of the western European leagues quite well, and some of the eastern ones. I’ve tried to rate them on the basis of professionalism (as I’ve defined it) and standard of play. There are some educated (hopefully) guesses (eg Ukraine, Finland). There is obviously some overlap. For example, the top teams in Germany and Belgium are at the similar level to top teams in Greece, Poland and France but I’ve tried to rate the league as a whole.
Here goes…
LEVEL 1A (fully professional, highest standard)
Italy, Russia
LEVEL 1B (fully professional, very high standard)
Greece, Poland, France
LEVEL 2A (fully professional, high to very high standard)
Ukraine, MEVZA**, Turkey
LEVEL 2B (fully professional, high to very high standard at the top -> variable professionalism and standard at the bottom)
Germany, Belgium, Spain
LEVEL 2C (mostly professional, high standard at the top)
Holland, Czech Republic, Finland, Serbia, Montenegro,
LEVEL 3A (mostly professional, good standard at the top)
Portugal, Slovenia, Hungary, other eastern European leagues (not including MEVZA teams)
LEVEL 3B (some professional players, good standard at the top)
Austria (not including MEVZA teams), Switzerland
LEVEL 4 (some professional players, variable standard)
Sweden, Denmark
**Middle European Volleyball Zonal Association, the best teams from Slovenia, Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, Hungary do not actually play in their home leagues but in MEVZA. They only join their home leagues for the playoffs

Aussie volleyballer Peter Baumann comments on getting used to playing in Europe
There have been a few cultural things that have taken me by suprise, one of them being when I walked into the spa area at Health City and was informed I was not allowed to wear clothes! Coming from a country that finds it offensive when someone shows too much skin this was a bit of a shock, but I have since learned to embrace this new culture! more@STV Tilburg

the most beautiful championships in the world?
Posted by markleb on October 1, 2008
With a typical gift for the dramatic Italians like to refer to their league as ‘la piu’ bella campionato del mondo’. For most of the last 25 years nobody could disagree with the statement. Italians have had the most resources, paid the most money and therefore attracted the best players. The overall quality of play has been the highest of all the leagues with the playoffs being typically the best quality volleyball on the planet (Olympics included).
But a few things have happened in the last few years. Firstly, more money started coming into the Russian league and attracted the Russian players back home. Then a couple of big clubs in a few leagues (like France, Poland and Greece) started to be able to get together enough money to build great teams. The leagues didn’t get much stronger overall, but great teams popped up in new places and suddenly Italian clubs weren’t dominating Champions League like they had.
In the last 4 or 5 years, the Russians have opened their doors and started throwing BIG money around. A lot of players are still reluctant to live in Russia so the effect has not been dramatic, but Russia is clearly now the biggest paying league. On top of that, more teams in leagues such as Greece, Poland and Turkey have got together enough money that the players just below the very highest level can make more money there than they would in Italy, without having to live in Russia. Brazil is making one of its periodic attempts to boost its own league and has attracted many Brazilians back home. And in Italy it has not been plain sailing. Big clubs in Rome and Milan folded during the summer throwing the player market into chaos. Among other effects Miljkovic could find no team in Italy and had to go to Greece and Mastrangelo may play A2 as he tries to force Rome to honour his contract.
So the upshot is that this season, the Italian league may be the weakest it has been in a long, long time. As some kind of indication, only 4 (of 36) medal winners from the Beijing will be playing in Italy this season. More than half will be playing in Russia (notably Ball, Stanley, Priddy, Giba, Dante), and most of the rest will be in Brazil. With the late demise of Rome and the subsequent complications there are 3 genuinely weak teams in the league and some clubs that have historically fought against relegation will this season be fighting for the playoffs. That having been said there is still plenty of intrigue. Champions Trento have lost 2 starters and may come back to the pack a little while perennial contenders in Piacenza, Macerata and Cuneo will have sights set on at least semi final positions. But as ever the most interest lies in Treviso. After playing off for the championships in 12 of the previous 13 years they bombed out at the quarter final stage last season. They identified the problem as being the setter and made only one change to the team, bringing in the Brazilian Ricardo. While normally considered to be the best setter in the world he has had problems recently with the National Team and his previous Italian club and plays a completely different style of game to that which has served Treviso so well for the last 6 or 7 seasons. For this reason alone many insiders are more excited about how this season will play out than they have for many years. The side plot will be how several young Italian players develop, notably Martino in Macerata and Parodi in Verona. For Australians, Dan Howard’s Montichiari are slightly stronger on paper than last season and should be well in the playoff mix.
So while Serie A1 is no longer the richest league, and may not even be the best, Italians will likely still argue it is the most beautiful.
Follow it yourself at the league site or volleyball news site.

I want my volleyball skills to improve and as a player to mature. It is a great experience to be able to play at such high level. The competition is strong. This means that we must give everything and the best of it.
It was, in the beginning, a little frightening in a foreign country, but the support of the team and the management was simply overwhelming.

Phill and Brett make good start
Posted by devo on September 1, 2008
Aussie players Phill DeSalvo and Brett Alderman played in a “friendly” tournament on the weekend with their new German club SG Eltmann - Google translation
Their coach was satisfied with the current state of preparedness. Coach Maric, commenting on the new look team which has recruited heavily in the off season, said, “We have more power play, now have yet technology and tactics to come.” … “But in what were our first real games, it is quite normal that after only a week of joint training the team is still being fine-tuned.”
Eltmann (who finished mid-field last season) played Generali Haching (who played finals last season with Aussie Steve Keir) in the final of the tournament. Although going down 3-0, the team was pleased with the result as two starting players were unavailable (injury & National Team duties)
Final: Eltmann - Haching 0:3 (18:25, 24:26, 23:25). - more@DVL
