Mt Lofty rightly “crows” about the AVL weekend

Posted by devo on November 10, 2008

Mt Lofty Community Sports Centre and Mt Lofty League Volleyball Club played host to four visiting teams from interstate for Round 3 of the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) Mens series 2008 on the weekend.

In usual Mt Lofty style, the venue and atmosphere was both electric and professional in every respect, with teams and spectators alike very complimentary about the way in which the round was delivered.

The Australian Volleyball Federation Events Manager, Susan Diver-Tuck, who was over to officiate the weekend, commented that, “Mt Lofty has set a very high standard in event presentation, and they are clearly the leaders so far this year in delivering AVL. I know that Queensland have taken some serious note of what they have experienced this weekend, in the hope of doing something similar in round 4 in Brisbane, which they will be hosting in 2 weeks time. Mt Lofty appeared to just take it in their stride, with years of experience and the history of a very passionate and dedicated club behind them, making sure the weekend ran error free.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hunyadi

Posted by devo on November 7, 2008

I first saw Luke Hunyadi play as a junior.  One of the best junior setters that I have seen. ( Matty DeSalvo ranks 1, then Matt Young, then Shane Alexander and Luke close behind. BIAS? - Bulldust!) If the Volleyball Australia commentary tonight was anything to go by, Luke showed his class leading Adelaide to a win over UTSSU 3-1 in the 3rd round of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League.

Men’s AVL Poll

Posted by devo on November 4, 2008

At the end of voting, both the AIS and the Queensland Pirates had firmed as your equal favourites (26%) to win the Men’s Australian Volleyball League for 2008.

We are all awaiting the next round where the top 3 teams, including UTSSU (19%) will play against each other. Will UTSSU show that they should be one of the favourites? Were the AIS suffering “Bali Bellie” and jet lag in Melbourne? Will the Pirates rip the national title away from the AIS?

I’ll have another poll up so that you can change your vote. Or have you already seen enough to confirm your previous vote.

See the vote results here.

Mens’ AVL round 2

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

UPDATED 26 Oct:

You can now see all the results from the weekeend’s round 2 matches here

Melbourne Blues and WA share the top of the ladder with 5 wins from 8 matches. However, Queensland Pirates and UTSSU, who did not play this weekend, are in 3rd and 4th spots with 4 wins from 4 games, and are most likely to progess quickly up the ladder next round. The surprise has been the AIS, who sit on the bottom of the ladder with only 1 win from 3 matches. Training should be “interesting” at the AIS this week.

In our poll (left hand column) the punters still have the AIS to win this competition (30%) from Pirates (26%). It will be interesting to see if the AIS still maintain that position after this weekend’s results.

Men’s AVL round 2 is underway in Melbourne this weekend. Uni Blues defeated Adelaide in the first match tonight 3-1.

You can follow the matches on the Volleyball Australia site, and on the AVL page.

Lofty keeps us up-to-date with AVL

Posted by devo on September 2, 2008

Hello Susan,
The AVF site lists Friday 22nd August as the date for the men’s AVL final draw with team rankings to be confirmed.
Are you able to provide me with a copy of the teams and the draw?
Regards,
Allan DeSalvo 30/08/08

Hi Allan,
I will be able to provide you with the information that you requested by tomorrow morning.
Due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a delay in getting this information out to the public.
Kind regards,
Susan Diver-Tuck
1/09/08

8:15pm 2/09/08 Still waiting Susan. It’s frustrating. I understand that it’s difficult to negotiate with groups who have their own interests at heart. But again we see that Volleyball Australia don’t understand the basic idea that keeping their membership informed of how things are progressing means that their membership feel part of the process instead of feeling alienated from it. Thank goodness we have some people able to keep us informed. Thank you Lofty.

Latest is that there are 7 teams in a double round robin across 4 rounds. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland. We’ve got there. Finals will be in Melbourne on weekend immediately prior to national Schools cup. Our guys are looking forward to it. Still on the expensive side, but with the trend to go to state based next year and beyond, it might be the last opportunity to play a national club based AVL competition.
New coordinator Susan Diver-Tuck has done well to get to the position we are now in, especially taking into consideration the number of phone calls and emails flying around last week between clubs.
Now we all just have to make every round a memorable one and enjoy, play hard and prove we clubs have what it takes to sustain a national league, and cement yet again our thoughts from last years forum.

UPDATE: Susan has informed me that she was away from work sick yesterday. Never-the-less, this has been a long process, where the majority of the volleyball public were kept in the dark, wondering what the heck was going on. The AVF have a web site, but fail to utilise it to its full advantage to keep Aussie volleyball fans informed. We are interested.

Lofty on AVL 08

Posted by devo on August 22, 2008

When I spoke to Susan Diver Tuck (AVF Competitions & Events Manager ) last week - it sounded like there were 5 committed teams for men’s AVL. We have since nominated, however, once I became aware of the degree of the equalisation levy - on top of the nomination fee - and realised costs are nearly back to what they were last year, and we all know what happened in 2007, I am having second thoughts. I have reserved Mt Lofty’s right to withdraw, based on notification of the levy amount and how many other teams nominate … On top of that poor ol’ Mildura have been removed from the draw as a venue … $3575 (nomination fee) would buy us a lot of volleyball in other ways, and or allow us to put on a weekend, with prizemoney, or pay visiting teams accom etc etc … more@comments

Two teams in AVL

Posted by devo on August 8, 2008

Our correspondent Nic reports that Canberra Heat entered the Australian Men’s Volleyball League on Wednesday - so AVL has 2 teams that we are aware of. Queensland Pirates is the other team. I assume that the AIS will be involved. I’m told that Uni Blues is training hard in Melbourne. Who else will be signing up?

One team in AVL

Posted by devo on August 7, 2008

It’s still 11 days until the deadline for entries to this year’s Mens Australian Volleyball League. Still not A lot of info out there on who is entering a team. One team that has bitten the bullet is Volleyball Queensland and the Queensland Academy of Sport who are planning to enter a team  under the name Queensland Pirates. They are now seeking “Expressions of Interest” from any registered Queensland players to be part of the Queensland Pirates squad. more@BrisbaneVolleyballClub

Fiji defeat Australia squad 2-0

Posted by devo on July 31, 2008

The Fiji Times is reporting that the Fiji women’s volleyball team shocked the Australian senior women’s training squad 2-0 on Tuesday night to create history. The team becomes the first ever Fiji national team to beat its Australian counterpart, despite the fixture being a friendly build-up.

“Australia underestimated us and we won in straight sets. Actually I wanted us to play five sets but we didn’t have time; so we played three sets. We won 25-20 and 25-22.”

The Australia squad, selected after the AVL finals over the weekend, is preparing for a tour to Europe. more@FijiTimes

And now Men’s AVL?

Posted by devo on July 30, 2008

With the Women’s Australian Volleyball League finished and packed away for another year, thoughts again turn to the men’s version.

New Volleyball Australia “web guru” Teresa has already been on the job. A quick look at the AVL page @ Volleyball Australia shows that it has been tidied up. You can find the links that disappeared for a while to Volleyball Australia’s prefered model for the Men’s AVL, and an entry form. With expressions of interest for the 2008 Men’s Australian Volleyball League competition due in by 18th August, and the final draw due out on the 22nd of August, new Competitions & Events Manager Susan Diver-Tuck, will need to hit the ground running next Monday.

Volleyball Australia’s Chief Executive Officer Joan Perry tells me that she will will discuss AVL with Susan … as one of the first priorities. I am aware that there is definitely still interest from the clubs in participating in Men’s AVL.

South Australia’s Brian Kempe posted this comment recently.

What are the thoughts of other potential AVL men’s teams/clubs on this year’s competition? If you have some thoughts and comments, I would love to hear them. We are still trying to decide what we are going to do. If you would rather talk to me off the website - feel free to email me or call me off the net! Would love to discuss.

Have seriously thought about getting something together ourselves - is anyone else interested in this option? Please let me know. Timing is of the essence now however. Nominations close for the AVF proposal on Aug 18 so we need to get cracking if this is a real possibility.

So where are the clubs up to? Will there be a Men’s AVL this year? Next year? Are clubs intending to meet the 18 August deadline? Will they be entering a team? Is AVL a goer this year? We would be pleased to hear from the clubs where their planning is up to. Or are we all keeping are cards close to our chests?

Sydney North defeat Fiji

Posted by devo on July 25, 2008

Our Sydney North correspondent, Sally Bacon, reports on Fiji’s first warm up game before they compete in the AVL finals this weekend.

Well the game is now over and Sydney North (consisting of Katie Bartoli, Amy Uso, Jenelle Gordon, Sally Bacon, Sam Skinner, Briianka Wilson, Barbora Nemeckeyova) defeated Fiji 3-2. The Fijian team had been training since 6pm and then they played Sydney North at 8.00pm.

They have some quality players, especially a nice 6ft 3 left hander (number #2) who plays through the middle - she is hard to hit around and the ball stings if you get in the way :o) Due to my credit card jump i was not able to block her out, however, I did cause some problems with some fast plays.

The setter (#3) has a nice serve and sets well.

The Fijian team have massive jumps, lots of power and they seem to pick up everything. They were very similar to playing Kenya.

I think the pace of the AVL teams will confuse them, especially the quick plays through the middle, and any team that can slide will also win a lot of points.

The Fijian team had nice serves and liked to serve short - a lot. Free balls tended to go back short or, if the opposing setter was front court, then the free balls would go to position 2!

This team is a lot of fun to play and will rattle the AVL teams if they are not on their game. The girls will really benefit from competing against the AVL teams and they will only get better as the weekend progresses.

Can you help Fiji volleyball?

Do any teams coming to Sydney have any old volleyball nets, playing strips / uniforms or volleyballs that they no longer need? The Fijian season starts in September and they would like to get some extra gear that anyone might want to off load.

Fiji one player short

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

The Fijian volleyball team travelling to Australia to play in this weekend’s AVL finals will be leaving one of its team members behind in Fiji. FijiVillage.com reports:

A top women’s Fiji volleyball player was denied a visa this morning to travel to Australia for the buildup matches to next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Ana Vuniwaqa, who was part of Fiji’s silver medal team in last year’s Pacific Games in Samoa, will miss the trip because of her links to a high ranking officer in the Fiji Military Force. Fiji volleyball team coach Varanisese Maraiwai said now they will only be taking 14 players on the 10 day tour.

The Fiji Women’s Volleyball team has for the first time ever got an opportunity to compete in the World Cup qualification tournament, which will be in Japan next year. The 14-member squad will depart tomorrow morning (Thursday) for Australia. more@FijiVillage

Fiji to play in AVL finals

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

UPDATED: ORIGINALLY POSTED 22/07/08
The Fijian women’s team is heading to Australia. They will be competing against teams in Sydney as part of their preparations for the FIVB World Championship qualifiers in Japan next year. While in Australia, the side will compete in the Australian Volleyball League finals this coming weekend.

“Australian Volleyball Federation invited us after we enquired about our possible inclusion in the tournament,” Maraiwai said. “We will be the only international team and apart from competing, we will play warm-up matches against top clubs from Sydney. It’s all part of getting the players exposed to top level volleyball.”

The side is a young one with the average age of 21. Seven of the players were part of the 2007 South Pacific Games while the remaining eight are rookies. “It’s a very young team. Most of the girls have been around the scene after leaving high school,” Maraiwai said. “The most experienced player would be Claire Delai, who has been around since 2003.”  more@FijiTimes ~ more@FijiTimes2 ~ FijiDailyPost

Men’s AVL plan out this week

Posted by devo on June 11, 2008

Information on the proposed staged plan for AVL 2008-2015 will be released this week.

There has been increasing frustration among the AVL community as clubs have waited for information on the Men’s 2008 season. Brian Kempe from Mt Lofty Volleyball Club for one has expressed his frustration to Volleyball Australia. He has been unhappy that it is over six months since the December forum with the AVL clubs, and says that now is not a reasonable time to be delivering minutes. I actually thought this year … that the competition … might start to get back on track … It is increasingly frustrating that our sports national body cannot communicate … in a timely and professional manner.

In Volleyball Australia’s defence Michelle Slack-Smith says that … since October, I’ve consulted with the State General Managers and then the AVL club administrators via the December forum and we are at a cross-roads. The two groups have separate needs/wants and the AVL as it stands can’t deliver it to both … The staged plan is an effort to provide a framework that people understand, a common goal and a timeline to achieve it.    There’s been a lot to contend with due to the position various groups have taken in respect to the hosting, administration, preparation of teams etc for the men’s league.

… everyone wants consistency, affordability and longevity.  I’m hoping that the development of this plan will give everyone the chance to buy into the long term goal … There will be time throughout the next few months for consultation/feedback on the 2009-15 portion of the plan before commitments are firmed, because the buy-in from the various groups has to be a commitment to the long term with some defined performance areas, so that we can measure and achieve that long term future of this format.

The delay is also associated with the budget process which is directly affected by the format we propose and run in 2008/09 financial year …

We will all get to see the plan later this week. For the sake of volleyball I hope that all the stake holders can get their act together and deliver a successful Men’s Australian Volleyball League. The wait has been too long, but if the plan works, the wait will have been worth while.
