I was really happy with most of my play throughout the day, getting a lot of points on serve and blocking and hitting reasonable well. However in the last 10 minutes of the final I struggled with my reception, passing the ball right to the net 5 times in a row making it really tough for Greg to set me (slipped back into indoor mode there!) - - - Luke, get some tips from Phill! more

Aussie indoor centre player Luke Campbell is playing in the 1st leg of the Triple Crown on the Victorian Beach Tour at South Melbourne Beach in Melbourne today .
Over the last month or so I’ve been doing some training for beach and it certainly is a different sport to indoor, although a lot of skills do overlap. I must say I’m really excited to get out there with my partner Greg Dury and see how we will go as we haven’t trained or played together before. more
I’d love to hear from anyone who sees the big guy play. Does he make the transition? Certainly will be a big block.
Luke has decided to stay in Melbourne rather than head overseas again this year. I have decided to stay in Melbourne with my family and friends. The longer I have spent here the harder it is to leave such a vibrant city, and seeing my family and friends full time is something I have really missed over the past 10 years. more

Mt Lofty Community Sports Centre and Mt Lofty League Volleyball Club played host to four visiting teams from interstate for Round 3 of the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) Mens series 2008 on the weekend.
In usual Mt Lofty style, the venue and atmosphere was both electric and professional in every respect, with teams and spectators alike very complimentary about the way in which the round was delivered.
The Australian Volleyball Federation Events Manager, Susan Diver-Tuck, who was over to officiate the weekend, commented that, “Mt Lofty has set a very high standard in event presentation, and they are clearly the leaders so far this year in delivering AVL. I know that Queensland have taken some serious note of what they have experienced this weekend, in the hope of doing something similar in round 4 in Brisbane, which they will be hosting in 2 weeks time. Mt Lofty appeared to just take it in their stride, with years of experience and the history of a very passionate and dedicated club behind them, making sure the weekend ran error free.” Read the rest of this entry »

Women’s Volleyball Olympian Nicole (Sanderson) Hannan traveled all the way from Australia to Pepperdine University to receive her award as a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee.
“Nicole traveled half-way around the world to convince me to pay for her education to play volleyball for the Waves,” said women’s head coach Nina Matthies. While at Pepperdine Hannan became one of the first players in history to earn All-West Coast Conference first team honors four times. She graduated from Pepperdine in 1997 with a degree in sports medicine. She competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics for her native Australia and finished fourth in Beach Volleyball. “I came to Pepperdine from the other side of the world and made new friends, family and teammates,” said Hannan. “Nina always believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.” more@pepperdine

The Provisional calendar for the 2009 World Tour has been set and released on the FIVB site.
To my surprise, there was no mention of Adelaide! There is hope in the article - “The calendar is subject to change by the FIVB, with decisions pending on a few double-gender events that need to confirm date and/or location.”
Maybe Adelaide is one of these?
http://www.fivb.org/viewPressRelease.asp?No=18280&Language=0
For those that were involved - playing, refereeing, working, or just watching - the 2008 event was fantastic. I know a huge amount of work went in behind the scenes, and it would be a shame if this all fell apart after 1 year.
So does anyone have an inkling as to what is going on?
Rumours abound last year’s event of heavy fines, poor ticket sales, needless to say the level of work required. Having run it once, I’d have thought that Year 2 should be significantly easier, and achieve better spectator volumes.
At the time, I thought it an “interesting” time to take on the new project, with a new WAVL, no MAVL, a new VTAW programme, large staff changes, and a new National Beach Tour Promoter and Sponsor. 2009 also offers its share of challenges, especially with still no definite details for the National Beach Tour - http://www.avf.org.au/index.php?id=774.
The Provisional National Tour Dates have a final event listed in Adelaide, hopefully gearing up to the World Tour, so let’s hope that the only reason for not mentioning it in the FIVB release is a date confirmation being required!!!

… the keenest watchers of women’s beach volleyball (at the Olympics), according to the survey, were men aged 50 and above. In fact, as many as 70 per cent of males in this age group watched the sport during the Olympics, compared with 44 per cent of females in the 16 to 29 group. The proportion of older men tuning in may have been even higher than this, since some who watched may well have been too embarrassed to admit it in the survey. Was this the perv factor at work? Probably. What else could it be? How else can you explain the fact that more men aged 50 and over watched women’s beach volleyball at the Games - a sport few of them would have known much about … full article at SMH
I feel I have to defend myself. As a newly retired 55+ I watched a lot of the Olympics - I had the time to do it. And I watched a lot of the beach volleyball - even though regular readers would be aware that I am not a great fan of the sandy variety of the game. Does that make me a “purve”?
I chose the best - in my opinion - viewing at the time. This was usually the beach volleyball (okay, I was a little interested, and I had to tape it for Mrs Devo). The Sydney Morning Herald article does go on to conceed that … nearly all sports at this year’s Olympics had their biggest TV audiences in Australia in the 50-plus age range. The statistics were high because this was the biggest viewing group. We were the ones at home during the day. But the media have an obsession with combining beach volleyball with sex.
Surely it’s time for the media to get over the purve image of the beach game? It’s becoming monotonous - even for me. And I’m sure insulting for the athletes that play.

The Australian pairing (and number 3 seeds) avoided the second upset of the day - the Brazillians lost earlier. They smashed a 15-6 win in the third to make it through to the quarter finals, but the Dutch Sophie Van Gestel and Michelle Stiekema, who came through the qualification rounds, knocked off Palmer and Rohkamper of Australia in the quaterfinals in two close sets to progress to the semi-finals.
Palmer and Rohkamper entered the Brighton Beach competition as one of the top teams after claiming the silver medal at the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships in Modena, Italy. A year earlier in Bermuda, Palmer and Rohkamper won the gold medal at the SWATCH-FIVB Youth World Championships for players under the age of 19. more@fivb

Only 10 of the tandems advancing to the elimination rounds were seeded among the top 16 teams in the 2008 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships presented as the first two days of the Main Draw schedule featured pool play at the Nivea Sun Yellowave, the first permanent beach sports venue in the United Kingdom.
The eighth annual SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships, which also features men’s competition, will stage two rounds of single-elimination bracket play Saturday for both genders to determine the “final four” teams for Sunday’s semi-finals and medal matches.
While the women played only one round of 12 pool play matches Friday, each men’s team competed twice on Brighton Beach with damp and windy conditions. In addition to capturing gold medals Sunday, the winning teams will be awarded “wild card” berths at a future SWATCH-FIVB World Tour events in either 2008 or 2009.
The third-seeded Palmer and Rohkamper, who claimed the silver medal at the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB Junior World Championships after losing the three-set finale to Lili Maestrini and Barbara Figueiredo Seixas of Brazil in Modena, Italy, captured their pool with a 3-0 record win wins over teams from Poland, Norway and Switzerland. more@fivb

BEACH volleyball legend Natalie Cook hasn’t ruled out a fifth Olympics appearance in 2012 but admits now is no time to be making career decisions.
“I just need a rest. It’s been 16 years of non-stop, hard physical activity on my body and my mind and it’s time now to just soak it in and enjoy,” the 33-year-old Queenslander said after partnering Tamsin Barnett to their 24-22 21-14 quarter-final loss to Brazil in Beijing.
“The end of 2008 will be a rest and hopefully Santa Claus can bring me a present that tells me what to do and the New Year’s resolution is to talk about it and to see if I can keep going.” more@FoxSports

“We’ve got a Brazilian coach so that helps and we know what annoys him so we’re pretty sure we know what annoys them as well,” Barnett joked on the Seven Network on Thursday.
While sledging isn’t allowed in the sport, Barnett said Cook had a few subtle slurs up her sleeve to psych out opponents.
“Nat’s pretty good at doing sneaky sledges because you’re not allowed to (sledge),” Barnett said.
“Some of them don’t understand English so you can say what you like,” Cook cheekily replied. “But Tamsin’s got some extra height so she just puffs her chest out and they all get intimidated. Just a little bit of sand in the eye,” she added.
Cook said Wednesday’s battle with the Brazilians was tough. “It really did feel like war … high pressure and point for point, and Tamsin at the net was blocking amazing and I’m throwing around sand everywhere and it was hot and steamy, just very very high pressure but we came out on top,” she said. “It’s like eye of the tigers, it’s just feisty.”
Cook said she was in the best shape of her career and was looking forward to getting her hands on another gold medal. “We’re playing great and if we keep playing to our form then that (a gold medal) is a really high possibility.” more@SBS

Aussies Natalie Cook and Tamsin Barnett finish undefeated and top of their pool, defeating the number 3 ranked Brazillians 2-0 in their final pool match. They became the first team to progress to the round of 16.
… four-time Olympian and former gold medalist Natalie Cook of Australia scampered around the sand digging out balls rocketed down by third-ranked Ana Paula Connelly and Larissa Franca. “That felt like a medal match,” the 33-year-old said after the 23-21, 23-21 win. Winning their pool gives Cook and partner Tamsin Barnett a seeded place in the last 16. more@Reuters
With the victory, the Australians replaced Ana Paula and Larissa as the third-seeded team in the elimination phase of the competition. Cook is now 16-3 for Olympic matches with three different partners as she won medals with Kerri Pottharst (bronze, Atlanta1996 and gold, Sydney 2000), and placed fourth with Nicole Sanderson at the Athens 2004 Summer Games.”I thought our teamwork was very good today,’ said the 33-year old Cook, who still considers herself a viable candidate for the London 2012 Olympic Games. “We were strong at the net and we defended well. Ana Paula and Larissa are very gifted players, so you got to be ready for anything that happens. We can now relax and enjoy the Olympic atmosphere for a day.” more@fivb

Natalie Cook talks about the progress of beach volleyball in this Reuters post.
The international tour has also blossomed since an exhibition event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
That year, there was one women’s event with $50,000 prize money while the men had $820,000 over five tournaments. By the Atlanta qualifiers the total prize money had jumped to $3 million and is now above $8 million. Sponsorship and domestic tours add to the pot although the total is still small change in comparison to the likes of soccer.
Cook wants beach volleyball to fix more big tournaments on an annual basis to keep up the Olympic momentum, adding to the biannual world championships and shifting world tour. “We have no real fixed facilities. We just put up stands on a beach or tip sand into a tennis court which means it’s expensive to set up tournaments,” she said. “I’ll keep beating that drum, but even with the Olympics we may not hit the really big time in my lifetime.” more@Reuters
