International Standing Volleyball Federation Established

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

The Standing Volleyball nations of Germany, Slovakia and Cambodia – ranked #1, 2, and 3 in the world respectively - have jointly led the way in the formation of the world’s newest international disability sports federation: The International Standing Volleyball Federation (ISVF)

The ISVF is to be established in direct response to the long – term and ongoing lack of support for Standing Volleyball and its development within the World Organisation of Volleyball for the Disabled (WOVD). The WOVD’s policy of focusing solely on the development of Sitting Volleyball has led the three leading Standing Volleyball nations to formally withdraw from the WOVD, effective as at 31 October 2008. Aussies pledge help for disabled in Fiji

Posted by devo on August 8, 2008

MORE than 300 students took part in the Central-Eastern Regional Games for the Disabled at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday. Participants from eight disabled schools took part in sports including sitting volleyball and standing volleyball … The Games turned out to be fun for all involved.

The event was opened by Australian High Commissioner James Batley, who assured participants of his country’s commitment to disabled sports in Fiji. Welcoming participants, Batley praised the Fiji Paralympic Association (formerly known as the Fiji Sports Association for the Disabled) for its efforts to promote sports for people with disabilities … “I’m pleased to say that the Fiji Paralympic Association will continue to receive support from the Australian Sports Commission through to July 2011,” Batley said. more@FijiTimes

Olympian at disability event

Posted by devo on June 25, 2008

On Sunday 22nd June, D-Volleyball SA, in conjunction with Goodwood Volleyball Club, introduced Sitting Volleyball to South Australia at Goodwood Community Centre. Mark Whiteman, an Australian Paralympian from New South Wales and President of the Sitting Volleyball Australia, assisted with teaching the skills of the game.

The day was promoted through partnerships with government, other disabled associations, and the use of websites and newsletters. This resulted in disabled members of various groups coming to try the sport. It was a family day and members of the family were invited to participate. Much laughter and keen competitiveness made it a day to remember. Many of our disabled visitors enjoyed themselves so much, they are eager to spread the word in their association and encourage others to play.

D-Volleyball is now looking to establishing a social competition using the volleyball club’s facilities to raise the awareness and interaction of the disabled with able bodied players. This was highlighted on the day with the interaction being enjoyed by club members with the disabled visitors. Both able bodied and disabled players have broken the ice and look forward now to getting the social competition running. Each team must have at least one disabled player so competition has now commenced as teams seek to adopt a disabled player.

Aussie volleyball good news story

Posted by devo on January 17, 2008

Here is a story of an Aussie - Chris Minko - doing great things via volleyball

Chris Minko made his way to Cambodia in 1996, a year before landmines became headlines … This was the genesis of The Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled Organization) or CNVLD. Volleyball is tough enough with two arms and two legs. Imagine if you are one of the 40,000 (not a misprint) chonpika, or amputees, in a country where 1 in 290 people have been blown up … Chris’ organization has taken this human rights disaster and these dis-abilities and created A-bilities with, not only one of the very few national athletic organizations in Cambodia, but one of the few recognized by The United Nations. Mr Le - sad news

Posted by devo on December 27, 2007

National Volleyball Committee of Australian Sports Organisation for Disabled Chair - Barry Couzner - sadly reports:

On behalf of the National Volleyball Committee of the Australian Sports Organisation for the Disabled (NVC of ASOD), I wish to express our deep sadness at the unfortunate accidental death of the Chinese Women’s Sitting Volleyball coach, Mr Le Rong Rong.

Mr Le was instrumental in providing great support to the establishment of the first Australian Women’s Sitting Volleyball team and will always be remembered for the special way in which he set about promoting volleyball for athletes with a disability.

Mr Le will be sadly missed at all future volleyball events, especially the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008, where we would like to recommend that a special ceremony be held in his memory in cooperation with the Chinese team.

WOVD press release wrong?

Posted by devo on September 21, 2007

Correspondent Nik tells me that the Aussie team will not be going to the WOVD World Cup.

Unfortunatley, due to a mixture of player non-availability and the costs involved, the Australian Standing Team will not be competing at this year’s World Cup.

We are currently looking to expand our player base to help avoid this situation in future. If you are, or know someone who plays volleyball and has a physical disability - however small or large - please let us know.

You can contact Nik at: development@volleyballact.com.au for further information.

2007 WOVD Volleyball World Cup - updated

Posted by devo on September 20, 2007

Stand Up Cambodia: 2007 WOVD Volleyball World Cup

History will be made from Nov 24th – Dec 2nd, 2007, when Cambodia hosts its first ever team sport World Cup. The WOVD (World organisation of Volleyball for the Disabled) Volleyball World Cup to be held at the Olympic Stadium, Phnom Penh. This unique event, under the patronage of the Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen, who will officiate over the opening ceremony, is already receiving widespread international recognition and is a powerful symbol of Cambodia’s return to the international community as an active and contributing member

The Teams:

The Phnom Penh World Cup will be the biggest ever World Cup in the history of the WOVD with nine nations having confirmed their participation: Canada (current World No 1), Slovakia (current World No 2), Germany (Current No 3), Cambodia (current World No 4), Australia, Poland, Malaysia, India and Myanmar. Press release more

Great to see the Aussie guys fronting up in Phnom Penh. It’s time now for every one to get behind these guys and help out with fund raising. If one of the Aussie team members is in your association, how about getting in and helping them on their way to the next World Cup?

Check this example at Templestowe College, Melbourne last week more
