Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer into semis

Posted by devo on November 8, 2008

After winning a pair of matches on Friday at the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open, Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer became the first women’s team since 2000 from Australia to advance to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour “final four” without having either Natalie Cook or Kerri Pottharst as part of the partnership. more@fivb

On a day when all home players crashed out, the formidable Jennifer Boss and April Ross brushed off Nicole Branagh and Tyra Turner in the all-American battle to join Australians Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer in the semi-finals of the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open at Karon Beach. more@fivb

Posted by devo on November 7, 2008

With three teams from the United States and Olympic tandems from Austria and Georgia winning as expected here Thursday on Karon Beach, it was the victories by pairs from Australia and Italy that highlighted the women’s Beach Volleyball action at the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open.

The teams of 13th-seeded Becchara Palmer/Tamsin Barnett of Australia and 16th-seeded Daniela Gioria/Giulia Momoli of Italy scored upset SWATCH FIVB World Tour wins over Beach Volleyball pairs from Brazil to advance to the third round of the winner’s bracket for matches Friday morning against tandems from the United States and Germany, respectively. FIVB World Beach Tour 2009 - where’s Adelaide?

Posted by edbinnie on November 6, 2008

The Provisional calendar for the 2009 World Tour has been set and released on the FIVB site.

To my surprise, there was no mention of Adelaide! There is hope in the article - “The calendar is subject to change by the FIVB, with decisions pending on a few double-gender events that need to confirm date and/or location.”

Maybe Adelaide is one of these?

http://www.fivb.org/viewPressRelease.asp?No=18280&Language=0

For those that were involved - playing, refereeing, working, or just watching - the 2008 event was fantastic. I know a huge amount of work went in behind the scenes, and it would be a shame if this all fell apart after 1 year.

So does anyone have an inkling as to what is going on?

Rumours abound last year’s event of heavy fines, poor ticket sales, needless to say the level of work required. Having run it once, I’d have thought that Year 2 should be significantly easier, and achieve better spectator volumes.

At the time, I thought it an “interesting” time to take on the new project, with a new WAVL, no MAVL, a new VTAW programme, large staff changes, and a new National Beach Tour Promoter and Sponsor. 2009 also offers its share of challenges, especially with still no definite details for the National Beach Tour - http://www.avf.org.au/index.php?id=774.

The Provisional National Tour Dates have a final event listed in Adelaide, hopefully gearing up to the World Tour, so let’s hope that the only reason for not mentioning it in the FIVB release is a date confirmation being required!!!

Cook on beach volleyball

Posted by devo on August 12, 2008

Natalie Cook talks about the progress of beach volleyball in this Reuters post.

The international tour has also blossomed since an exhibition event at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

That year, there was one women’s event with $50,000 prize money while the men had $820,000 over five tournaments. By the Atlanta qualifiers the total prize money had jumped to $3 million and is now above $8 million. Sponsorship and domestic tours add to the pot although the total is still small change in comparison to the likes of soccer.

Cook wants beach volleyball to fix more big tournaments on an annual basis to keep up the Olympic momentum, adding to the biannual world championships and shifting world tour. “We have no real fixed facilities. We just put up stands on a beach or tip sand into a tennis court which means it’s expensive to set up tournaments,” she said. “I’ll keep beating that drum, but even with the Olympics we may not hit the really big time in my lifetime.” more@Reuters

Kapa and Richardson still hopeful for Olympics

Posted by devo on April 18, 2008

With the Olympics in his sight, 22-year-old Isaac Kapa is ready to take the international stage by storm.

The former Mackay talent competed in his first world tour last year with his partner Brett Richardson, a multiple Australian champion. Kapa admitted he was “thrown in the deep end” with the tour. “It was a good learning curve for me,” he said.

The team had a successful start to 2008 when they were ranked first in the Crocs Tour Australia in March. Now, Kapa has his focus set on Beijing.

One Australian team has already secured their ticket to Beijing and Kapa is hopeful he and Richardson can qualify for the remaining place. “It’s not going to be easy by any means,” Kapa said. “But I think we’ve definitely got a shot.” Daily Mercury more

Spike has great addition to its site

Posted by devo on April 10, 2008

Over at the Spike Magazine site they have set up the Spike Game Centre. It has video, photos, stats and game wraps from the FIVB World Tour event in Adelaide. The centre features 17 games. It is missing footage for a few games, including the medal round, because of a camera issue. The guys at Spike are promising to have footage of  those games up early next week.

As far as they know, there is nothing like the Game Centre anywhere else in the world. Check it out.

Adelaide Australian Open entry list is hot

Posted by devo on February 25, 2008

With the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volley World Tour Adelaide Australia Open only one month away, the organisers are reporting that entries to the event have closed and the field for the Adelaide Australia Open for both men and women is outstanding.

The organisers are extremely excited about the calibre of athletes who will be coming to Glenelg Beach, South Australia to compete from 25-30 March. Tournament Director Barry Couzner says, ‘Being a new event and the first on the 2008 SWATCH FIVB Beach Volley World Tour calendar and also a Beijing Olympic Qualification event, we expected to have a good line up of teams competing, but to have 9 of the top 10 ranked men’s teams and 8 of the top 10 women’s teams competing is an amazing outcome for the event. The competition is truly going to be world-class’.

There is no doubt that the competition will be hot. The big names from the men’s draw include world number 1 ranked team of Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos from Brazil, 2007 SWATCH FIVB Beach Volley World Championships Gold Medalists Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers from the USA and world 13th ranked Australians Andrew Schacht and Josh Slack. The big names from the women’s draw include the Brazillian world number 1 ranked team of Larissa Franca and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva along with the world number 2 ranked Chinese team of Tian Jia and Wang Fei and the number 3 ranked team of Chen Xue and Zhang Xi also from China. The world 14th ranked Australians Natalie Cook and Tamsin Barnett will also be competing.

The full entry list for the SWATCH FIVB Beach Volley World Tour Adelaide Australia Open is available from the Adelaide Australia Open website www.wtadelaideopen.com

Beach qualifying for Beijing

Posted by devo on February 2, 2008

It’s a long and winding road which will lead the world’s best 48 (2×24) Beach Volleyball teams to Beijing. The Olympic Qualification process started last year and will continue in 2008 with the upcoming 2008 FIVB SWATCH World Tour, which will have its opening in Adelaide (25-30 March).

The rules are simple: each pair is free to play in the events they wish, to get the best 8 results to compose the ranking. They can select any tournament of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour 2007 and 2008 … the drawing of lots will take place on 26 July to compose the pools for Beijing. No more than two pairs for each gender per country are allowed to entry the list, which adds a fascinating National fight to the amazing International battle.

The complete Provisional Olympic Ranking is published on the FIVB website, linked directly to the home page. For Men: For Women:

Read the full FIVB press release here. Currently Aussies Schacht and Slack are ranked 10th in the men’s rankings. Barnett and Cook are ranked 9th in the women’s rankings.
