FIVB World Beach Tour 2009 - where’s Adelaide?

Posted by edbinnie on November 6, 2008

The Provisional calendar for the 2009 World Tour has been set and released on the FIVB site.

To my surprise, there was no mention of Adelaide! There is hope in the article - “The calendar is subject to change by the FIVB, with decisions pending on a few double-gender events that need to confirm date and/or location.”

Maybe Adelaide is one of these?

http://www.fivb.org/viewPressRelease.asp?No=18280&Language=0

For those that were involved - playing, refereeing, working, or just watching - the 2008 event was fantastic. I know a huge amount of work went in behind the scenes, and it would be a shame if this all fell apart after 1 year.

So does anyone have an inkling as to what is going on?

Rumours abound last year’s event of heavy fines, poor ticket sales, needless to say the level of work required. Having run it once, I’d have thought that Year 2 should be significantly easier, and achieve better spectator volumes.

At the time, I thought it an “interesting” time to take on the new project, with a new WAVL, no MAVL, a new VTAW programme, large staff changes, and a new National Beach Tour Promoter and Sponsor. 2009 also offers its share of challenges, especially with still no definite details for the National Beach Tour - http://www.avf.org.au/index.php?id=774.

The Provisional National Tour Dates have a final event listed in Adelaide, hopefully gearing up to the World Tour, so let’s hope that the only reason for not mentioning it in the FIVB release is a date confirmation being required!!!

The FIVB Sports Events Council has agreed that starting from 2009 there will be a minimum of two vacancies per continent in each category of the Junior and Youth Volleyball World Championships.

The remaining vacancies are to be distributed in accordance with the number of teams from each continental confederation registered for the event, the rank of the registered national teams and continental confederation activities. The host country of the World Championship should be included in the number of vacancies allocated to a continent. more@fivb

Aussie goes OS to offer coaching course

Posted by devo on August 24, 2008

The FIVB has sent veteran Aussie coach Tomas Santamaria to Saipan to conduct a clinic from Aug. 20 to 27.

It is part of the FIVB’s Volleyball World Vision 2012, which envisions national federations and confederations to become the most professional organizations, each one at its one level, with modern, flexible, and efficient administration under a professional management setting. This year, 66 nations from Asia, the Caribbean, Middle East, Africa, and the Pacific were scheduled to benefit from the program.

“The clinic aims to teach CNMI players/coaches the skills in volleyball, theories, techniques, and the proper way of coaching,” said the Melbourne-based Santamaria.  Before joining the FIVB in 1990 as an instructor, Santamaria coached the Australian Men’s Volleyball Team for 10 years. He was also a member of the Philippine Team in the early ’50s and played in the Asian Games and coached the RP squad in the World Women’s Volleyball Championships and the first Asian Women’s Volleyball Championships in the ’70s. more@SaipanTribune

men’s quarter finals

Posted by markleb on August 19, 2008

It seems that Australian TV has shown more volleyball than the four countries feeds I have been watching but here is my two cents.

The men’s quarter finals are set.  Because of the ridiculous ‘Bernardinho Rules’, we got to sit through 6 mostly pointless matches to wait for the most important part of the day, the drawing of lots for the quarter finals.  USA v Serbia, Bulgaria v Russia, Italy v Poland, China v Brazil.

USA have been the most impressive team until now.  They have had the easier group but completely outplayed Italy and won easily against Bulgaria in the two ‘tough’ matches.  They will play Serbia who played well in patches but lack a little overall quality, especially with Kovacevic breaking a bone in his hand.  In a best of one series, the USA will not relish a match against Grbic and Miljkovic but it is an Olympic quarter final.

Bulgaria will be pleased to be playing Russia.  Partly because they know them very well, and partly because they are always a chance to choke.  Russia played really in winning their first four matches and just needed to win against Poland to finish first in the group and lost against a team that was just waiting for the drawing of lots.  They lost.  Bulgaria on the other hand welcomed back their captain and most experienced player (and not doped) Konstantinov.

On form Poland should win easily against Italy.  They have played excellent 21st century volleyball (fast, aggressive, precise) throughout the tournament, even matching Brazil for a while at their own game.  Italy have had injuries to 3 key players, have alternated liberos and have changed lineups every match.  What they have played they looked relatively slow and conservative.  Still, Italy is Italy and they have enormous experience in big matches.

Brazil haven’t played at the same level they have shown for the last five years but have improved as the tournament progressed.  In the quarter finals I think they would have been vulnerable against a good team.  China has done well to reach the quarter finals but I can’t imagine a scenario where they can challenge Brazil.   And I have a feeling that other teams will live to regret Brazil having another relatively easy match to continue to improve their rhythm.

So, the semi finals will be (maybe) USA-Russia, Poland-Brazil.  Final (possibly) Russia-Brazil. Medals (could be) Brazil, Russia, USA

I don’t know if that’s worth two cents, but if it is Zorzi is worth at least a dollar.  And not just because I agree with everything he wrote.

7 players on the court?

Posted by devo on August 18, 2008

UPDATE: originally posted 17/08/08

One of the beauties of volleyball is that the rules are not sacrosanct. The FIVB looks at the rules (usually every Olympic year) and is prepared to make changes. This has traditionally been to balance offensive and defensive advancements. In more recent times, to enhance the appeal of the game to television.

On his blog Andrea Zorzi canvases the case for 7 players on the court. The libero becomes a player, rather than a replacement. This would bolster the defense, and prolong rallies. What do you think?

Thanks to correspondent Russ you can look at the USA women’s team at the Sydney Olympics playing with 7 on the court. And they weren’t picked up!

Olympic Rosters (Part 2) / Olympic Preview

Posted by markleb on August 8, 2008

There haven’t been any roster announcements since the last post, but since time is running out we’ll have to go with best guesses.

BRAZIL

SETTERS Marcelo Elgarten, Bruno Rezende OPPOSITES Andre Nascimento, Anderson Rodrigues PASSER HITTERS Giba, Dante Amaral, Murilo Endres, Samuel Fuchs MIDDLE BLOCKERS Gustavo Endres, Rodrigo Santana, Andre Heller LIBERO Sergio (World League finals team)

Three weeks ago Brazil were the odds on favourites to win the gold medal. With 6 of the 7 starters from the Athens Olympic and 2006 World Championship gold medal winning teams returning and at the peak of their games they are still clear favourites. But the performance at the World League finals will give their opponents some cause for optimism. Giba is still Giba and is uniquely inspirational in big events, but much will rest on the shoulders of Marcelo who takes the place of the best setter in the world, Ricardo. They play with speed and precision and passion that is far above other teams. Make sure to watch them!

RUSSIA

SETTERS Vadim Khamuttskikh, Sergey Grankin OPPOSITES Semen Polstavskiy, Maxim Mikhaylov PASSER HITTERS Alexander Korneev, Alexander Kosarev, Sergey Tetyukhin, Yury Berezhko MIDDLE BLOCKERS Alexey Ostapenko, Alexander Volkov, Alexey Kuleshov LIBERO Alexey Verbov (World League finals team)

If height was the major determinant of success in international volleyball, Russia would already have the gold medal. The Russians are the biggest, strongest and arguably most talented team in the world. Tetyukhin has been the best all around player in the world for years and Poltavskiy is an outrageous talent. My favourite Russian story… after being destroyed in a friendly match, the French coach was asked how his team could possibly hope to beat them in an upcoming tournament. His reply was ‘If they play like that we have no chance. But we don’t think they’ll play like that when it counts’. History shows, Russia never wins the big one. And friendly games don’t count.

SERBIA

SETTERS Grbic, Petkovic OPPOSITES Miljkovic, Starovic PASSER HITTERS Kovacevic, Bojovic, Janic, Nikic MIDDLE BLOCKERS Bjelica, Geric, Podrascanin LIBERO Samardzic (World League finals team)

The biggest surprise of the World League finals was the performance of Serbia. Since 2006 they have turned over most of the team but two stars remain. Setter Nikola Grbic has experience (bronze in ‘96, gold in Sydney) and form (after winning his first Italian Championships) and opposite Ivan Miljkovic still has claims to being the best player in the world. The young players probably don’t yet have the quality to push for a medal in such a big tournament but with Grbic and Miljkovic leading, no one will want play them, just in case.

GERMANY

SETTERS Tischer, Dehne OPPOSITES Schoeps, Pampel PASSER HITTERS Popp, Kromm, Andrae, Siebeck MIDDLE BLOCKERS Huebner, Bergmann, Boehme LIBERO Kroeger

The Germans have qualified for the first time since 1972 and will be hoping for a big tournament. While they are lacking in big time experience as a team, Stefan Huebner is perhaps the best middle blocker in the world and opposite Jochen Schoeps is one of the best servers. They play a very aggressive style relying heavily on strong serving and blocking and will be an uncomfortable team to play. If they have a good day at the right time, they could easily win a match against one of the top teams in the group phase, which could get them into the quarter finals.

THE OTHERS

CHINA, JAPAN and VENEZUELA all play in Pool A and one of them will reach the quarter finals. China have the home advantage but have no recent results to support their case. The match up between Japan and Venezuela will probably be the decisive match. Japan put in their best performances in years to qualify and will feel confident about their chances. Venezuela qualified for the first time ever by beating Argentina in Argentina and have a long history of success at junior level. Japanese opposite Yamamoto can be devastating on his day but his Venezuelan counterpart Ernardo Gomez has 10 years experience with some of the top clubs in Europe and with the help of Luiz Diaz, who is a rising star in Italy, should have the edge.

EGYPT has a horror draw and have no chance of reaching the quarter finals. Setter Ahmed has the experience of a year with top Italian club Sisley Treviso but even his great serve will not be enough to get them out of the group.

Posted by devo on July 28, 2008

Brazil miss the podium! USA takes gold.

For the first time ever in the FIVB World League history, the USA jumped on the highest step of the podium. The FIVB’s flagship annual Men’s competition closed this year assigning more than USD 20 million in Prize Money. Another joy came for the USA team with the MVP prize, awarded to Lloy Ball (also best setter of the Final Round). more@fivb ~ more@WorldLeague ~ more@Zorzi

So how much volleyball history do you know? Do you know anything about the development of the game?

  • What year was volleyball invented?
  • Who invented it?
  • What was volleyball originally called?
  • Which country perfected the use of the block?
  • Which year was the FIVB formed?
  • In 1949, The first Men’s World Championship was held in Prague and won by the USSR. What advance in tactics was first seen at these championships?
  • Who was the first paid professional volleyball employee in Australia?

You can find more on the history of Volleyball at the FIVB site. You can read more on Aussie Volleyball at the Renegades site. While you are at the Renegades site, you might be able to help them update this Aussie history.

New Olympic Volleyball

Posted by devo on June 30, 2008

You can check out the new volleyball for the Olympics - Mikasa MVA200 -  on the Mikasa site.

olympic volleyballMikasa claims that the volleyball has advanced aerodynamic engineering, which offers better stability and ball control than any other indoor ball. They say that the volleyball brings a brand new look and feel to the game and will be seen in action for the first time as the world’s best indoor volleyball athletes compete for gold at the Olympics this year.

Mikasa claims tests conducted in close cooperation with leading Volleyball National Teams throughout the world, resulted in the following key features of the new MVA balls:

  • Balls fly more stable due dimple surface and reduced panels
  • Increased grip due to new dimple technology cover material
  • Increased visibility of the ball due to new panel-shape/design
  • Reduced rebound of the new ball = increased controllability
  • Reduced impact-power = increased softness of the new ball

We won’t know just how the ball performs until it is released here in Australia. It is available from the USA Mikasa site and also from several sports sites (US$60 to US$65). My goss is that the ball floats more than the PR suggests; and in fact, sometimes floats both ways. A nightmare for pass hitters and liberos. I understand that the ball will be available here about the time of the olympics.

The (FIVB) Congress also agreed to empower the FIVB Board to decide the immediate use of a lower-pressure ball in order to increase the length of rallies and for the MVA200 to be the official game ball during the Beijing Olympic Games.

Let them play

Posted by devo on June 21, 2008

let us playFIVB President Acosta has demanded that the  EU do not obstruct the world sports system recognized by the Olympic Charter and that it respects National Sports Associations operating under the authority of the International Sports Federations.

The 31st FIVB World Congress recently approved the FIVB Board of Administration decision regarding International Transfer Certificates (ITCs) to help the development of local players, protect the identity of National Leagues and stop monopolies of financially strong Clubs. From the 2010-11 season, Clubs will be free to engage as many players as they want from other National Federations (ITC players), but when they come to play the number of ITC players on court at any one time, will preferably be set at two. Notwithstanding, a National Federation may authorize one extra ITC player on court per team. more

Acosta has maintained that the decision does not conflict with any European law on the freedom of movement of workers, since each Club can engage as many players coming from another National Federation as they like. His bluster, and ongoing need to defend the position seems to indicate that things are not as clear cut as he would have us believe.

Indeed, the warnings that the EU have given to soccer in Europe, who have considered similar restrictions on employment, suggest that this situation is far from decided. The EU are not convinced. This law will not be decided by the FIVB World Conference.

The only certainty is that, in the two years run in to the implementation of the law, there will be a lot of money spent on lawyers in the courts of Europe.
