Aussie player visits Wonnie

Posted by devo on November 17, 2008

Australian player Luke Campbell ran 2 clinics at Wonthaggi Secondary College this last week. And weren’t the girls impressed! They’re still talking about the big guy. (click picture to enlarge)

I was lucky enough to sneak back to my old school for the sessions. I was also impressed. So much so that we have invited Luke back again in 2 weeks time. If your school has the opportunity, get in contact with Luke. I was particularly happy with the way that Luke was able to adapt the sessions to meet the different needs of the groups, and to fit in with what the coaches wanted to cover.

Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer into semis

Posted by devo on November 8, 2008

After winning a pair of matches on Friday at the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open, Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer became the first women’s team since 2000 from Australia to advance to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour “final four” without having either Natalie Cook or Kerri Pottharst as part of the partnership. more@fivb

On a day when all home players crashed out, the formidable Jennifer Boss and April Ross brushed off Nicole Branagh and Tyra Turner in the all-American battle to join Australians Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer in the semi-finals of the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open at Karon Beach. more@fivb

Becchara and Tamsin in upset

Posted by devo on November 7, 2008

With three teams from the United States and Olympic tandems from Austria and Georgia winning as expected here Thursday on Karon Beach, it was the victories by pairs from Australia and Italy that highlighted the women’s Beach Volleyball action at the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open.

The teams of 13th-seeded Becchara Palmer/Tamsin Barnett of Australia and 16th-seeded Daniela Gioria/Giulia Momoli of Italy scored upset SWATCH FIVB World Tour wins over Beach Volleyball pairs from Brazil to advance to the third round of the winner’s bracket for matches Friday morning against tandems from the United States and Germany, respectively. the hidden cost of cool toys

Posted by markleb on October 10, 2008

If you’re a coach you’ve probably thought about how much easier your life would be if you had one of those cool serving machines.  I haven’t personally checked but I’m quietly confident that none of the companies selling serving machines publish ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photos for your brand new $85 Mikasa Olympic volleyballs.

The ‘After’ photo is after two weeks.

salivating in public

Posted by devo on August 31, 2008

On my recent trip to Adelaide, John Tiver took Rohan Young (Queensland) and myself to see the Brighton volleyball facility. It’s embarrassing when you drool in public. But the “shed” has that influence on you. - Click on picture to enlarge.

  • 3 permanent taraflex on sprung wooden floor courts
  • 4 beach courts
  • Cameras that can be remotely changed to a different viewing angle
  • Courtside plasma screen for immediate replay to athlete
  • Abilty to capture and store completed action for later replay from courtside
  • So quiet that they introduce noise to simulate match conditions

This facility is beyond doubt the best in the country. I can only assume that Aussie coach Russ Borgeaud hasn’t seen it. Otherwise the Aussie volleyball program would be joining the beach in South Australia!

Congratulations to John Tiver and the crew at Brighton. That a school could have the vision to seek and get this standard of facity is a credit to them. With the new facility at Heathfield now up and running, it seems that the South Australian dominance of Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup is set to continue.

Cook and Barnett into Olympic quarter finals

Aussie beach volleyballers at the Olympics, Natalie Cook and Tamsin Barnett, continued on their winning way and into the quarter finals after a surprisingly hard-fought victory over Greece in hot and sunny conditions at Beijing’s Chaoyang Park complex. There was very little to separate the two sides, with attack successes and errors virtually identical on either side of the net. more@SBSmore@ABC

Fiji to play in AVL finals

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

UPDATED: ORIGINALLY POSTED 22/07/08
The Fijian women’s team is heading to Australia. They will be competing against teams in Sydney as part of their preparations for the FIVB World Championship qualifiers in Japan next year. While in Australia, the side will compete in the Australian Volleyball League finals this coming weekend.

“Australian Volleyball Federation invited us after we enquired about our possible inclusion in the tournament,” Maraiwai said. “We will be the only international team and apart from competing, we will play warm-up matches against top clubs from Sydney. It’s all part of getting the players exposed to top level volleyball.”

The side is a young one with the average age of 21. Seven of the players were part of the 2007 South Pacific Games while the remaining eight are rookies. “It’s a very young team. Most of the girls have been around the scene after leaving high school,” Maraiwai said. “The most experienced player would be Claire Delai, who has been around since 2003.”  more@FijiTimes ~ more@FijiTimes2 ~ FijiDailyPost

Australian Junior Volleyball Championships

Posted by devo on July 10, 2008

ajvc 2008

ajvc 2008

I have spent a few hours over the last two days at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships at Dandenong. Wow! A great tournament with some great volleyball action. I have particularly enjoyed watching the under 21 Queensland Boys’ team play. With an AIS front court lineup on 4 rotations, they are awesome. At times dangerous. The NSW under 19 Boys is also worth a watch for a view of the future.

It’s also great to watch the coaches in action - it is junior volleyball. Four point winning margins evapourate in seconds and then reappear. It is easy to see why so many coaches end up bald!

It was great to catch up with some interstate and international friends. That’s the best thing about being part of the volleyball community - the friendships. It was also nice to catch up with people who visit the site, and to now be able to put a face to some of the people who post comments. I also bumped into well known football player Luke Campbell - don’t worry Russ, he survived his first match with only a few bruises and caulkies!

I’ll certainly be there for the finals on Saturday. If you are a Vic, don’t miss out on this opportunity to see the future of the sport in action - State Volleyball Centre 270 Stud Road Dandenong

NZ prepares for AIS competition

Posted by devo on July 2, 2008

When new New Zealand men’s coach Tony Barnett decided to cast his net wider than anyone had done in the past, Palmerston North players Soane Vaipulu and Matt Quinn found themselves discovered.

They are to play for New Zealand against the Australian Institute of Sport development team in Canberra next month.

Previously teams were chosen from the top-end players at the nationals and those who couldn’t get there didn’t get selected. Vaipulu and Quinn were picked after two months of trials involving 120 players. more @ Manawatu Standard

New Olympic Volleyball

Posted by devo on June 30, 2008

You can check out the new volleyball for the Olympics - Mikasa MVA200 -  on the Mikasa site.

olympic volleyballMikasa claims that the volleyball has advanced aerodynamic engineering, which offers better stability and ball control than any other indoor ball. They say that the volleyball brings a brand new look and feel to the game and will be seen in action for the first time as the world’s best indoor volleyball athletes compete for gold at the Olympics this year.

Mikasa claims tests conducted in close cooperation with leading Volleyball National Teams throughout the world, resulted in the following key features of the new MVA balls:

  • Balls fly more stable due dimple surface and reduced panels
  • Increased grip due to new dimple technology cover material
  • Increased visibility of the ball due to new panel-shape/design
  • Reduced rebound of the new ball = increased controllability
  • Reduced impact-power = increased softness of the new ball

We won’t know just how the ball performs until it is released here in Australia. It is available from the USA Mikasa site and also from several sports sites (US$60 to US$65). My goss is that the ball floats more than the PR suggests; and in fact, sometimes floats both ways. A nightmare for pass hitters and liberos. I understand that the ball will be available here about the time of the olympics.

The (FIVB) Congress also agreed to empower the FIVB Board to decide the immediate use of a lower-pressure ball in order to increase the length of rallies and for the MVA200 to be the official game ball during the Beijing Olympic Games.

A spectator on Japan

Posted by devo on June 27, 2008

From our special court side commentator from the Olympic qualifiers in Japan: Trevor Carroll

japan-posterjapan-stadiumThe organization and venue were the best I have ever seen.

As westerners we stood out like sore thumbs. As we entered an English speaking attendent approached us and assisted us personally to our designated seats. Our seats were the best, front row about three metres above the floor and about 8 metres from the court and about 4 metres to the left of the ref. Especially for us a handwritten sign in English (the only english sign at the event) said that we could not hang our banners on the rail in front of us. (the rails around most of the stadium held Japanese banners)

We hung the aussie flag on the rail in front of us and within minutes an official was there to have us remove it. This happened each day.

The game against Japan was an eyeopener. An hour before the match the stands were full, 9,997 Japanese, Hilde and myself and Ian Thorpe who was sitting a few rows behind us in the VIP area. This also held the boy band, 4 cameramen and about 10 security guards. The venue had no fewer than 26 cameras operating for the match.

Back to the pre match fun: the dancing girls or cheer squad came out and with the announcer they had cheering and chant practice. Everybody joined in, chanting players names and whacking their little whackers. We felt very small, but the Japanese around us were very polite and when they found that we were parents of an Australian player, we became minor celebs.

After the cheer practice and Mexican wave practice, the cheer squad moved off and the boy band came on. That sent the crowd crazy. Thank goodness they were over quickly!

The lights went down and and deep drums started. With flashes and booming drums, each of the aussie players entered the stadium alone, just like a rock star coming onto the stage. It was done really well. Each player ran on to deafening cheering and they each had a small volleyball which the Aussies threw high into the crowd. Our guys were on a mission, and each attempted to put the ball the furtherest into the stands. Each big throw earned a 10,000 OOOHHHH. Phillip DeSalvo went for the Aussie rules kick into the crowd.

The same happened with the Japanese, but their throws were timid little ones.

Both teams played well with the Aussies dominating. The Japanese looked worried, until the Aussies choked. It was really difficult for us to get any cheering down as 10,000 vs 2 found us left out of it. Although each time we won a point, we had a window of about 3 seconds. It was silence before the 10k started again. That 3 seconds allowed us to get an Aussie Aussie Aussie in and wave the flag. Japanese sitting around us also helped wave our flag.

The game was great to watch even though the result was not one that we were seeking. Our guys were tired, the Japanese were good. When they won the game, their reaction was one of relief, as we were the team to beat.

In relation to volleyball in Japan, I would go again in a heartbeat. As I said, the venue etc was great. We had a good hotel 20 minutes walk via the most beautiful gardens. We expected Japan to be expensive. Not so. It was comparable to Australia for hotel and transport; meals were cheaper.

Olympian at disability event

Posted by devo on June 25, 2008

On Sunday 22nd June, D-Volleyball SA, in conjunction with Goodwood Volleyball Club, introduced Sitting Volleyball to South Australia at Goodwood Community Centre. Mark Whiteman, an Australian Paralympian from New South Wales and President of the Sitting Volleyball Australia, assisted with teaching the skills of the game.

The day was promoted through partnerships with government, other disabled associations, and the use of websites and newsletters. This resulted in disabled members of various groups coming to try the sport. It was a family day and members of the family were invited to participate. Much laughter and keen competitiveness made it a day to remember. Many of our disabled visitors enjoyed themselves so much, they are eager to spread the word in their association and encourage others to play.

D-Volleyball is now looking to establishing a social competition using the volleyball club’s facilities to raise the awareness and interaction of the disabled with able bodied players. This was highlighted on the day with the interaction being enjoyed by club members with the disabled visitors. Both able bodied and disabled players have broken the ice and look forward now to getting the social competition running. Each team must have at least one disabled player so competition has now commenced as teams seek to adopt a disabled player.

Luke Campbell blog update

Posted by devo on June 12, 2008

I guess most people are aware by now that we didn’t qualify for the 2008 Olympics through the tournament in Japan last week. It’s difficult to put into words the disappointment I’m feeling, and I don’t doubt a large part of our squad is feeling at the moment.

For me, the Olympics is by far and away the pinnacle of my sport and not making it really makes me question if it’s worth dedicating so much of my life at the moment to volleyball. more @ Luke’s blog ~ pictures

Aussies defeat Algeria

Posted by devo on June 7, 2008

Phill DeSalvo

Volleyball Team Australia Men defeated Algeria this afternoon at the Olympic qualification tournament in Japan.

Nathan Roberts was match equal top scorer with 19 points. Phill DeSalvo with some great ups, and chase downs, was another highlight.

VTAM def Algeria 3-1( 25-22, 25-19, 18-25, 25-20).

Photo courtesy fivb - Phill DeSalvo - VTAM Libero

Head Coach Russell Borgeaud: Today I think at times both teams were a little error-prone, and certainly our guys were a little physically tired after last night, with a short turnaround time. It was good to see that some of the young players were able to come into the game and play very well. Credit to Algeria. They had some outstanding players and made us work very hard for the victory.

Captain Ben Hardy: I think it was maybe not our best performance today, but happy to get another win in the tournament and keep us in the race in theory for a ticket for Beijing. The purpose was to recover from yesterday’s game against Japan, and this gives us a chance still. (Looking back on the defeats by Italy, Korea and Japan): First we played against a very strong Italy team who played extremely well. The Korea game could have gone either way. We had certainly some opportunities and did not execute some basic skills. The Japan game was another close game and could have gone the other way. So perhaps in the end a little bit of our consistency was the difference in those games. If we could have maintained consistency in those games it could have made a difference. more @ fivb

Roberts was almost unstoppable at the Metropolitan Gymnasium and took control of the game from the opening set with his power outside spiking and accurate service game. He finished the match with 19 points – all from spikes – and his leaping from outside the court had the Algerians ducking for cover. “Nathan has certainly come of age this year and playing in his first major tournament like this in that position is a credit to him – he has the ability to control a game,” said Australian coach Russ Borgeaud, who was satisfied with his team’s comeback from the devastating loss to Japan.

‘There is no doubt we were physically tired after last night’s game given the short turn around time and in the end I had no alternative but to replace Dan Howard and Paul Carroll – they were plain tired. more @ Hanson Sport Media

Aussies lose to Japan

Posted by devo on June 6, 2008

vtamAustralia lost to Japan tonight in a close tussle, at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Japan. That ends their Olympic hopes, unless Japan loses their remaining 2 games. They play Argentina and Algeria. Australia would have to win their remaining two games and have a higher points ratio. They play Algeria and Iran.

Paul Carroll was the match high scorer with 22 points as the Aussies went down 22-25, 26-28, 27-29.

“The Japanese never gave up and showed a lot of fighting spirit and deserved to win,” said Carroll, Australia’s potent scoring weapon and a real star of the future. “But our boys also showed they had that same fighting spirit and we were very gallant in defeat – we have vowed to play our next two games against Algeria and Iran as if we are going to the Olympics.” more @ Hanson Sport Media

The Aussies play at 2:05 pm AEST on Saturday. You can watch them on Bet363. I’ll be barracking for Argentina against Japan at 7:00pm AEST.

Aussies’ moment of truth

Posted by devo on June 6, 2008

A fascinating clash between Japan and Australia will feature as the most important meeting of Day Five of the FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament in Tokyo when action resumes at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday.

After Thursday’s rest day, the two big Asian teams will come together in a crucial encounter in front of what is sure to be a full house. more @ fivb

vtamIf you read or listen to the guys in the Aussie team they love this atmosphere. 10,000 screaming Japanese, and only a handful of vocal Aussies in the crowd. Who wouldn’t get pumped?

This is cruch day. This is what 4 years of playing, and touring, and living on the other side of the world from your family is about. A four year journey leads to today and a must win match. Will the Aussie guys get to go to their 3rd consecutive Olympics?

You can watch the Aussie boys live at 7:30 tonight on the usual links:
