Australian player Luke Campbell ran 2 clinics at Wonthaggi Secondary College this last week. And weren’t the girls impressed! They’re still talking about the big guy. (click picture to enlarge)
I was lucky enough to sneak back to my old school for the sessions. I was also impressed. So much so that we have invited Luke back again in 2 weeks time. If your school has the opportunity, get in contact with Luke. I was particularly happy with the way that Luke was able to adapt the sessions to meet the different needs of the groups, and to fit in with what the coaches wanted to cover.

In one of the biggest working bees held in the hills of Adelaide, over 100 parents, coaches, teachers and players worked all day Saturday getting the Heathfield beach volleyball courts ready for the arrival of 44 truckloads of sand. (click picture to enlarge)
Ex student Andrew Frazer from Adelaide Hills Tree and Garden had spent all Friday cutting trenches in the base of the courts so that 500m of agricultural pipe could belaid. The 44 tonne from these trenches was removed by spade, track loader and wheel barrows by the morning shift, with the pipes being laid and backfilled with aggregate by the afternoon shift.
The biggest job was cutting a 100m long conveyor belt purchased from Whyalla into two lengths so that they could be set around the courts creating a very strong barrier between the soil and the expensive Olympic quality seven times washed sand. The positioning of the belt required all hands on deck. The workers were very lucky with the mild weather and the number of parents who were able to keep the workers fed and hydrated during the day.
Local construction company Diverse Civil and Commercial with Heathfield High School ex student Malcolm Long at the helm had prepared the sports centre site into a world class arena. The workers were certainly appreciative of the track loader operated by Mitchell and Malcolm during the day as 44 tonne of soil was moved out of the courts and 44 tonne of aggregate was moved back in.
The next project will be the seeding of the banks around the courts and the positioning of the lights so that the public can use the courts in the summer evenings. Early in the New Year a 25 meter long balcony viewing area will be built, again hopefully with the help of volunteers.
“At this stage we do have a slight problem with money for the timber and pavers,” said teacher Mr David Eldridge. The project is now registered as a tax deductible project so any donations will have tax deductibility status.
High School principal Ms Vivian Rusk, who was there to see the huge working bee in action, thanked the group for their fantastic efforts. Mark Lowrie, the father of Mt Lofty players Hannah and Josh and Malcolm Long were singled out for special thanks by the group as the project managers and for the many hour they had spent getting the project to this stage.
Mr David Eldridge also thanked the group and said, “It is humbling to be part of a community that so readily rolls up their sleeves to value add to their community.” One year10 girl had walked from Mt George to the school to start at the working bee at 8.30 am, worked both shifts on the courts and then had to work a shift in a local take away store.
“Kids like this give you a very different picture than that we have to see on television every night,” said Mr Eldridge.
The courts, with a budget of $175,000 have been totally funded by parents, Mt Lofty VBC and the Heathfield High School volleyball program.
The courts feature a full 40m grass grandstand on one side and a 30m pegola/balcony/viewing /kiosk area on the other side. The complex is surrounded by a 3.6m high security fence and will have lighting in excess of AVL standards.
The Mt Lofty Club is building a kiosk on the site which wil serve both the beach courts and the 7 volleyball court indoor heathfield complex.

Our most recent poll here on devo’s volleyball didn’t come up with any surprises. As I expected, the biggest recruiters of new volleyballers are our schools. Almost two thirds of the respondents became involved in volleyball because of their school. Family connection supplied another 30%.
Clubs are responsible for introducing only 4% of new players to the sport. Surprisingly, friendship groups are not a major reason, but these figures may be hidden in the school figures. It was not surprising that watching volleyball was not a factor - where would you see it - Olympic years excepted.

Admittedly, this survey only covered 50 people; so what do we take out of these figures? Do we give clubs a hard time for their lack of effort? I know that some clubs do a great job promoting juniors; most clubs are abysmal.
Or do we work harder at our proven source - schools? For a starter, I’d be providing level one coaching courses and resources to any teacher who wanted to be involved in volleyball - for free. I’d be inviting representatives from non-volleyball schools to State Schools Cup and National Schools Cup. Throw in some free nibbles and a glass of wine with a little presentation.
But how would you grow our sport? Let’s hear your suggestions. Click on the Comments>> tag at the bottom of this post and have your say.

On my recent trip to Adelaide, John Tiver took Rohan Young (Queensland) and myself to see the Brighton volleyball facility. It’s embarrassing when you drool in public. But the “shed” has that influence on you. - Click on picture to enlarge.

- 3 permanent taraflex on sprung wooden floor courts
- 4 beach courts
- Cameras that can be remotely changed to a different viewing angle
- Courtside plasma screen for immediate replay to athlete
- Abilty to capture and store completed action for later replay from courtside
- So quiet that they introduce noise to simulate match conditions
This facility is beyond doubt the best in the country. I can only assume that Aussie coach Russ Borgeaud hasn’t seen it. Otherwise the Aussie volleyball program would be joining the beach in South Australia!
Congratulations to John Tiver and the crew at Brighton. That a school could have the vision to seek and get this standard of facity is a credit to them. With the new facility at Heathfield now up and running, it seems that the South Australian dominance of Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup is set to continue.

Can you help? Have you played for Australia? School Sport Australia’s national secretary Stuart Scott is wanting to update their web site and records to show all those athletes that played in the Schools’ Championships and then went on to play for the Australian men’s or women’s teams. The list on the SSA site is well out of date. The list below is nearer the mark.
If you played in the School Sport Australia tournament, and represented Australia at senior level, and your name is not on the list, please contact Stuart and let him know, so that you can receive your recognition.
You can reach Stuart by sending him a message via the contact devo tag at the top of the page.

Trav Moran u16
The School Sport Australia National Under 16 Volleyball Championships get underway today in Adelaide at Marion. The opening ceremony is at 9am. The athletes will get to listen to ex-Aussie volleyballer and Olympian Travis Moran. Then it’s down to the action, as the Victorian girls and the Queensland boys defend their titles from last year.
There is a copy of the draw on the SSA page at the top of this page. You can follow the results at the SSA site.
My local correspondent tells me that the teams looked very even at yesterday’s training day. I’m heading over to Adelaide tomorrow to catch a day or two of the action. This has always been my favourite Junior tournament, and if you are lucky enough to be in Adelaide, make sure that you get along and check it out.
Mr Moran: I first saw Trav play at the SSA Championships. Unfortunately he was on the Gold Medal South Australian side of the net. I coached Victoria to the Silver Medal. We had Phill DeSalvo swinging outside on our side of the net. Both of these players became liberos for Australia, and remain great mates. It’s that sort of a tournament.
And of course -
GO VICS!

Check out http://www.avf.org.au/index.php?id=965 to get all the information you need for this year’s conference.
It is natural to ask: Is this conference really for me? I am just a high school coach? I am just a volleyball coach? The answer is definitively YES! YES! YES!
What is presented will help you raise the level of performance of your team or school program. The sessions will allow you ask questions and get answers from coaches who do this professionally. This is a great Professional-Development opportunity. Over on the Change the AVJC? post, people are commenting on costs. There is a hidden cost in volleyball. An article in the Central Western Daily on Blayney’s representatives in the Junior Champs highlights this. Who is the biggest sponsor of Australian Volleyball? Parents.
I sometimes think city players don’t understand the committment needed by country players and their parents. They can spend hours in a car to get to training, and then hours to get home again. A whole day is taken up. In the case of one athlete in an under 16 team I coached, the travel from Mildura took 5 hours plus each way, and effectively used up the whole weekend. That’s not only committment - it’s costly. Add up the petrol costs, the food costs, and in some cases the accommodation costs. Add on the tiredness as you struggle to work or school on Monday.
Volleyball is expensive. After an Australian Schools’ Championships in Canberra I was chatting to the WA captain who also represented WA in Cricket. The difference - Cricket paid most of the travel expenses.
So when city players complain about costs I am sympathetic. They are too high. But city parents do not pay the costs that are incurred week after week by country parents. So when you see the country parent sitting at training, go and buy them a coffee. They deserve it. They probably can’t afford to buy one for themselves.

Queensland prospered although New Zealand shared the international spoils when the trans-Tasman secondary schools volleyball series ended on Thursday at Nelson’s Trafalgar Centre.
Queensland walked away from the four-day tournament with both the boys and girls’ titles. But Australia missed the sweep when the New Zealand girls won their test in a five-set thriller, leaving the Australian boys’ team to wrap up the series with a 3-2 win over New Zealand.
The trans-Tasman competition involved teams from the North Island, South Island, Queensland and New South Wales, followed yesterday by test matches between the Australian and New Zealand … more @ The Nelson Mail ~ and here

As a parent who has put his hands in his pockets many times, I understand the costs of having talented volleyball offspring. (They get it from their mother!) So when I saw this in the Blacktown Advocate, I decided that we should get behind it. I am sure that there are other team members who equally need your support, so get your team or association into action if you can.
Bobbie Liang is a Year 12 student at Baulkham Hills High. Bobbie will represent NSW against New Zealand and other Australian teams in championships in Nelson from June 8-16.The Trans-Tasman challenge is her last opportunity to use her skill at such a high level. She needs your financial support to go out on a high. Travel to New Zealand and around the country isn’t cheap and any sponsorship will help her stay in the game.
Sometimes Devo’s Volleyball commentator Sally Bacon says: “Bobbie is an integral part of the NSW team and any monetary assistance you could provide would help her in her travels.”
