Good Neighbour and Heat development

Posted by devo on November 21, 2008

The Good Neighbour tournament is one of the longest-running volleyball competitions in Australia; it is the 43rd consecutive year it has been run in Canberra.

This weekened 100 club teams from across all states and territories apart from Western Australia, plus elite men’s and women’s teams from New Zealand, will compete over five men’s divisions, four women’s divisions and two recreational mixed divisions. The tournament will be played at three venues the AIS, National Netball Centre and ANU.

A loss will still be as good as a win for the Canberra Heat men’s team in the Good Neighbour Volleyball Tournament this weekend, according to coach Les Young.

The Heat is currently on the bottom of the Australian Volleyball League ladder with no wins from nine games, and has only won four of 31 sets. But Young is driving a development program for the next 18 months that is focused on creating a strong senior program in the years to come.

”This has been a development year so we haven’t really been focusing on results,” Young said. ”We have plenty of young guys in the team and we have a 17-year-old, Alex Turner, in the starting seven and a 15-year-old, Jordan Power, in our travelling squad. ”They have improved over the season so far and it’s just a matter of time before the results come.”

The Heat will play in the honours division and tackle the visiting New Zealand team in the first game of the men’s competition tonight at the AIS from 8pm. The Canberra Heat women will take on Auckland to kick off the tournament at 6.30pm. more@CanberraTimes

Heathfield High community effort

Posted by devo on November 16, 2008

In one of the biggest working bees held in the hills of Adelaide, over 100 parents, coaches,  teachers and players worked all day Saturday getting the Heathfield beach volleyball courts ready for the arrival of 44 truckloads of sand. (click picture to enlarge)

Ex student Andrew Frazer from Adelaide Hills Tree and Garden had spent all Friday cutting trenches in the base of the courts so that 500m of agricultural pipe could belaid. The 44 tonne from these trenches was removed by spade, track loader and wheel barrows by the morning shift, with the pipes being laid and backfilled with aggregate by the afternoon shift.

The biggest job was cutting a 100m long conveyor belt purchased from Whyalla into two lengths so that they could be set around the courts creating a very strong barrier between the soil and the expensive Olympic quality seven times washed sand. The positioning of the belt required all hands on deck. The workers were very lucky with the mild weather and the number of parents who were able to keep the workers fed and hydrated during the day.

Local construction  company Diverse Civil and Commercial with Heathfield High School ex student Malcolm Long at the helm had prepared the sports centre site into a world class arena. The workers were certainly appreciative of the track loader operated by Mitchell and Malcolm during the day as 44 tonne of soil was moved out of the courts and 44 tonne of aggregate was moved back in.

The next project will be the seeding of the banks around the courts and the positioning of the lights so that the public can use the courts in the summer evenings. Early in the New Year a 25 meter long balcony viewing area will be built, again hopefully with the help of volunteers.

“At this stage we do have a slight problem with money for the timber and pavers,” said teacher Mr David Eldridge. The project is now registered as a tax deductible project so any donations will have tax deductibility status.

High School principal Ms Vivian Rusk, who was there to see the huge working bee in action, thanked the group for their fantastic efforts. Mark Lowrie, the father of Mt Lofty players Hannah and Josh and Malcolm Long were singled out for special thanks by the group as the project managers and for the many hour they had spent getting the project to this stage.

Mr David Eldridge also thanked the group and said, “It is humbling to be part of a community that so readily rolls up their sleeves to value add to their community.” One year10 girl had walked from Mt George to the school to start at the working bee at 8.30 am, worked both shifts on the courts and then had to work a shift in a local take away store.

“Kids like this give you a very different picture than that we have to see on television every night,” said Mr Eldridge.

The courts, with a budget of $175,000 have been totally funded by parents, Mt Lofty VBC and the Heathfield High School volleyball program.

The courts feature a full 40m grass grandstand on one side and a 30m pegola/balcony/viewing /kiosk area on the other side. The complex is surrounded by a 3.6m high security fence and will have lighting in excess of AVL standards.

The Mt Lofty Club is building a kiosk on the site which wil serve both the beach courts and the 7 volleyball court indoor heathfield complex.

Luke Campbell hits the sand

Posted by devo on November 10, 2008

UPDATED: originally posted 9/11/08

I was really happy with most of my play throughout the day, getting a lot of points on serve and blocking and hitting reasonable well. However in the last 10 minutes of the final I struggled with my reception, passing the ball right to the net 5 times in a row making it really tough for Greg to set me (slipped back into indoor mode there!) - - - Luke,  get some tips from Phill! more

_________________

Aussie indoor centre player Luke Campbell is playing in the 1st leg of the Triple Crown on the Victorian Beach Tour at South Melbourne Beach in Melbourne today .

Over the last month or so I’ve been doing some training for beach and it certainly is a different sport to indoor, although a lot of skills do overlap. I must say I’m really excited to get out there with my partner Greg Dury and see how we will go as we haven’t trained or played together before. more

I’d love to hear from anyone who sees the big guy play. Does he make the transition? Certainly will be a big block.

Luke has decided to stay in Melbourne rather than head overseas again this year. I have decided to stay in Melbourne with my family and friends. The longer I have spent here the harder it is to leave such a vibrant city, and seeing my family and friends full time is something I have really missed over the past 10 years. more

Mt Lofty rightly “crows” about the AVL weekend

Posted by devo on November 10, 2008

Mt Lofty Community Sports Centre and Mt Lofty League Volleyball Club played host to four visiting teams from interstate for Round 3 of the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) Mens series 2008 on the weekend.

In usual Mt Lofty style, the venue and atmosphere was both electric and professional in every respect, with teams and spectators alike very complimentary about the way in which the round was delivered.

The Australian Volleyball Federation Events Manager, Susan Diver-Tuck, who was over to officiate the weekend, commented that, “Mt Lofty has set a very high standard in event presentation, and they are clearly the leaders so far this year in delivering AVL. I know that Queensland have taken some serious note of what they have experienced this weekend, in the hope of doing something similar in round 4 in Brisbane, which they will be hosting in 2 weeks time. Mt Lofty appeared to just take it in their stride, with years of experience and the history of a very passionate and dedicated club behind them, making sure the weekend ran error free.” Read the rest of this entry »

Hunyadi

Posted by devo on November 7, 2008

I first saw Luke Hunyadi play as a junior.  One of the best junior setters that I have seen. ( Matty DeSalvo ranks 1, then Matt Young, then Shane Alexander and Luke close behind. BIAS? - Bulldust!) If the Volleyball Australia commentary tonight was anything to go by, Luke showed his class leading Adelaide to a win over UTSSU 3-1 in the 3rd round of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League.

Men’s AVL Poll

Posted by devo on November 4, 2008

At the end of voting, both the AIS and the Queensland Pirates had firmed as your equal favourites (26%) to win the Men’s Australian Volleyball League for 2008.

We are all awaiting the next round where the top 3 teams, including UTSSU (19%) will play against each other. Will UTSSU show that they should be one of the favourites? Were the AIS suffering “Bali Bellie” and jet lag in Melbourne? Will the Pirates rip the national title away from the AIS?

I’ll have another poll up so that you can change your vote. Or have you already seen enough to confirm your previous vote.

See the vote results here.

Mens’ AVL round 2

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

UPDATED 26 Oct:

You can now see all the results from the weekeend’s round 2 matches here

Melbourne Blues and WA share the top of the ladder with 5 wins from 8 matches. However, Queensland Pirates and UTSSU, who did not play this weekend, are in 3rd and 4th spots with 4 wins from 4 games, and are most likely to progess quickly up the ladder next round. The surprise has been the AIS, who sit on the bottom of the ladder with only 1 win from 3 matches. Training should be “interesting” at the AIS this week.

In our poll (left hand column) the punters still have the AIS to win this competition (30%) from Pirates (26%). It will be interesting to see if the AIS still maintain that position after this weekend’s results.

Men’s AVL round 2 is underway in Melbourne this weekend. Uni Blues defeated Adelaide in the first match tonight 3-1.

You can follow the matches on the Volleyball Australia site, and on the AVL page.

South Australia State League

Posted by devo on September 17, 2008

Our SA correspondent Murph reports that the South Australian State League has been run and won for 2008…

In the Mens League:
Norwood df South 3-0 to win the State League title
Norwood league men have been the stand out volleyball team this year, losing only two games. The return of the league’s best setter and server Andy Hunter, best and fairest Nik West, best attacker and league MVP Travis Moran, along with Rookie of the Year Chris Butterworth and the consistant high standard of best receiver Jason Sidoryan proved too much for all comers this season. In a league this year where the likes of John Byron, Andy Earl and Aden Tutton also made returns to state league, Norwood were seldom tested.
South Adelaide played well in their finals matches to make the final after defeating highly fancied USC Lion and Mt Lofty Rangers, but were outplayed in the final. Josh Hixon was one of the best for South, taking out the Best Blocker award for the season. Adam Harris, coaching for his second season at the club his father started, Austral, won the League’s best coach award, a sure sign of good things to come at the club.

In the Womens League:
USC Lion df South 3-0 to win the State League title
USC Lion were as dominant as Norwood men this year, losing just four games on their way to another State League title. Led by strong passer/hitting by league MVP, best passer and best hitter, Stacy Kloeden, as well as expert setting by the league’s best setter, Lauren Scott, Lion won their Semi Final and Grand Final with ease. Alicia Davidge’s excellent serving was not enough to put a dent in Lion’s game.
Austral were the surprise packets this season, led by the league’s best coach Jason Potts, expert middle blocking by VTAW player Beth Carey and a new libero in Rookie of the Year Rosie Jarvis-Lemm, finishing third after a low table finish in 2007.

Mens Reserves:

Norwood df USC Lion 3-2 (17-15)
The tightest match of Grand Final day was in the Men’s reserve competition, where Norwood again showed their dominance of South Australian Men’s Volleyball. After a seesawing match, Norwood prevailed in the 5th with level heads and a strong middle presence. Best Spiker and MVP Tom West led the line for Norwood on the back of excellent back court play by best receiver Alex Costales. USC Lion will prove to be an even stronger team next year, as they mature into the next generation of league volleyballers.
South Adelaide took out the remaining awards for the reserves, but were just beaten to the final in 5 sets.

Womens Reserves:
USC Lion df Mt Lofty 3-1
In another tale of one club, USC Lion flexed their muscle over the women’s competition with a reserves win to match their league title. The Lion team, full of excellent young players, outplayed their more fancied opponents in the final, taking an exciting match in four sets.
Mount Lofty players were rewarded for their excellent, two loss, season with awards to Tegan Hale (best setter, rookie of the year), Verity Hanka (best spiker, MVP), Caitlin Kempe (Best and fairest) and best coach Janice Scott. Young Henley star Lauren Shippey was best receiver in a team who finished mid table.

A special thanks should go to all VSA staff who put on the season, and to Best Referee Ray Harris and Best Young Referee Esther Finn.

The Australian University Games needs refs

Posted by devo on September 16, 2008

The Australian University Games are being held in Melbourne from Monday 29th September through until Friday 3rd October and an urgent need exists for experienced players or coaches to referee in this competition.

This is Australia’s largest annual multi-sport event comprising 28 sports in 18 venues, with in excess of 6000 participants. Volleyball, both men’s and women’s, is one of those sports and will be played at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Matches will be played on five courts at MSAC with the aim of providing first referees for all preliminary matches and all officials for finals on the Friday.

The number of available qualified referees to service this event is insufficient, so we are now seeking the services of experienced senior players to officiate at this event. Unqualified officials will be paid at the rate of $20 per match and reimbursement of fuel costs may be available to regional officials subject to their availability.

In addition, official’s accreditation will allow access to all AUG social functions scheduled during the week.

Additional information may be obtained by phoning Murray Mansfield on 0407 322215 or email to spike_mm@hotmail.com.

NSW State League

Posted by devo on September 15, 2008

The New South Wales State League finals were played at the weekend.

Honours Men
The Bronze game saw an exciting five setter between UTS and USYD. UTS continued their good form from last week and came out firing to take the first set 25 to 21. USYD fought back to win the second but could not continue their run and lost the third. That was followed by a close fourth set which USYD managed to take out 26-24. UTS went hard in the fifth and led 8-0 before USYD clawed their way back, however the UTS led was too much for USYD and UTS took out the set giving them the Bronze for 2008. UTS def USYD, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-13.

In the Gold playoff, UNSW had nothing to lose against 11 time champions, Cedars. In what was a surprising start to the match, UNSW took out the first 25 to 22. However Cedars proved too strong taking the next two sets 25-19 and 25-18. UNSW were not to be discounted and tried their best to level the match, going point for point in much of the fourth set, however Cedars managed to get a few points ahead and UNSW could not come back, Cedars taking out the last set 25-23. Gold to Cedars! Cedars def UNSW, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-23.

Honours Women
Third place was decided last week, when UTS lost to SNV in the preliminary final. This week, SNV had to face USYD in the gold final, USYD were coming back after the week off. The first set was close, with the teams siding out most of the way through, keeping the scores level. However, USYD proved too strong in the end and they took out the set 25-23. They continued that run taking the second 25-18. But SNV would not go down without a fight and they managed to take the third 25-23. SNV managed to continue that form and led for most of the fourth set, however USYD pulled through in the end, taking the fourth set and the match 25 to 22. Gold to USYD! USYD def SNV, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-22.

Divison One Men
Bronze: USYD def Dragons 1 25-21, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21.
Gold: UTS def Eagles, 26-24, 17-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-10.

Divison One Women
Bronze: BHV H def Kaiata, 22-25, 25-15, 25-14, 24-26, 15-6.
Gold: Manly def USYD B, 26-24, 25-20, 25-19.

Junior Boys

Bronze: USYD def Dragons, 25-16, 25-21, 25-15.
Gold: Vostok def BHV, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 15-7.

Junior Girls
Bronze: BHV def USYD, 25-18, 25-10, 25-15.
Gold: SNV def UTS 2 25-23, 25-23, 25-22.

Club Championship
It was a close tussle between UTS and USYD this year, with both clubs having teams in almost all the division’s finals. USYD had an edge having entered more teams, however that would mean nothing if the teams did not go on to win. In the end the success of those teams resulted in USYD taking out the championship by a single point! Well done to both clubs for a well fought competition! Congratulations to USYD! more@ VolleyballNSW

New volleyballers

Posted by devo on September 8, 2008

Our most recent poll here on devo’s volleyball didn’t come up with any surprises. As I expected, the biggest recruiters of new volleyballers are our schools. Almost two thirds of the respondents became involved in volleyball because of their school. Family connection supplied another 30%.

Clubs are responsible for introducing only 4% of new players to the sport. Surprisingly, friendship groups are not a major reason, but these figures may be hidden in the school figures. It was not surprising that watching volleyball was not a factor - where would you see it - Olympic years excepted.

My school 31 62%
My family 15 30%
My club 2 4%
Other 1 2%
Watching volleyball 1 2%
My friends 0 0%

Admittedly, this survey only covered 50 people; so what do we take out of these figures? Do we give clubs a hard time for their lack of effort? I know that some clubs do a great job promoting juniors; most clubs are abysmal.

Or do we work harder at our proven source - schools? For a starter, I’d be providing level one coaching courses and resources to any teacher who wanted to be involved in volleyball - for free. I’d be inviting representatives from non-volleyball schools to State Schools Cup and National Schools Cup. Throw in some free nibbles and a glass of wine with a little presentation.

But how would you grow our sport? Let’s hear your suggestions. Click on the Comments>> tag at the bottom of this post and have your say.

Posted by devo on September 8, 2008

This weekend saw many exciting nail bitters as teams fought it out for finals glory!

Honours

The Bronze was up for grabs in the women’s today, however UTS were missing some of their players who were on national duties. SNV took that opportunity and won the match in three sets to book their place in the final against USYD.

Men - In what was the upset of the round, UNSW defeated USYD in four sets in their semi. Whilst USYD looked out of sorts, UNSW came out all guns blazing and deserved the win. In the other semi, UTS managed to take the first set from Cedars, however the firepower of the Cedars team was too much in the end and Cedars took the game in 4 sets.

Division One

Women - Kaiata and USYD B were the first to take the court. USYD B were last year’s winners and went in as the favourites, however, they were out of sorts in the opening sets. Nevertheless they got into shape and took the game in five. The other final saw Manly battling it out against BHV H, the BHV H were looking to make it their first gold medal final, however Manly were simply too strong and despite dropping a set, took out the match 3-1.

Men - USYD and UTS fought out a tense and close mammoth 5 setter. Each team thought they had the edge as the match see-sawed each way, however, UTS triumphed in the end 15-13 in the fifth! It was all one traffic in the other semi where the Eagles defeated the Dragons 3 -0. Despite their loss, the Dragons were throwing everything into it with one point ending in the referee falling off the stand as a player took him out trying to retrieve a ball. It’s okay, the referee was shaken but is still alive!

Juniors

In the girls, SNV and BHV played their semi at 9am, before any of the other courts started, but you couldn’t tell the gym was empty from the noise that the supporters and players made during their game. SNV took out the match 3 sets to 1, after BHV could not come back from their slow start. The other semi was all one-way traffic for UTS 2 who defeated an enthusiastic USYD team.

In the boys, Vostok were too strong for the Dragons in what was a convincing 4 set win. Meanwhile BHV came back from losing their first set against USYD to win the next 3 and book their place in the gold medal playoff against Vostok.

A special thankyou to our NSW correspondent. We are happy to post summaries from other states.

Lofty keeps us up-to-date with AVL

Posted by devo on September 2, 2008

Hello Susan,
The AVF site lists Friday 22nd August as the date for the men’s AVL final draw with team rankings to be confirmed.
Are you able to provide me with a copy of the teams and the draw?
Regards,
Allan DeSalvo 30/08/08

Hi Allan,
I will be able to provide you with the information that you requested by tomorrow morning.
Due to unforeseen circumstances there has been a delay in getting this information out to the public.
Kind regards,
Susan Diver-Tuck

8:15pm 2/09/08 Still waiting Susan. It’s frustrating. I understand that it’s difficult to negotiate with groups who have their own interests at heart. But again we see that Volleyball Australia don’t understand the basic idea that keeping their membership informed of how things are progressing means that their membership feel part of the process instead of feeling alienated from it. Thank goodness we have some people able to keep us informed. Thank you Lofty.

Latest is that there are 7 teams in a double round robin across 4 rounds. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland. We’ve got there. Finals will be in Melbourne on weekend immediately prior to national Schools cup. Our guys are looking forward to it. Still on the expensive side, but with the trend to go to state based next year and beyond, it might be the last opportunity to play a national club based AVL competition.
New coordinator Susan Diver-Tuck has done well to get to the position we are now in, especially taking into consideration the number of phone calls and emails flying around last week between clubs.
Now we all just have to make every round a memorable one and enjoy, play hard and prove we clubs have what it takes to sustain a national league, and cement yet again our thoughts from last years forum.

UPDATE: Susan has informed me that she was away from work sick yesterday. Never-the-less, this has been a long process, where the majority of the volleyball public were kept in the dark, wondering what the heck was going on. The AVF have a web site, but fail to utilise it to its full advantage to keep Aussie volleyball fans informed. We are interested.
