WOMEN’S BEACH VOLLEYBALL FINAL
1pm AEST (China v USA)
China in the beach volleyball final? What will they do next? Win at Bells Beach! They will win at least one medal today as Tian Jia and Wang Jie meet American defending champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor in the gold medal match, and Xue Chen and Zhang Xi take on the Brazilians for the bronze at 11am. (Love the writer at the SMH!)

The “copyright owners” have been working hard to make sure that noone streams content that could be making them money. Fat chance! Olympic coverage is all over the place. Some of it live. Apparently even volleyball today. (Sorry folks. I was alerted, but was away from the computer.)

The Sydney Morning Herald today carried a report on the coverage of the Olympics on TV. In part it said:
SBS’s schedule … is more locked in. Having set aside 220 hours, SBS will cover … volleyball, beach volleyball … about 75 per cent of it live. “The beauty of this arrangement is that we’re able to stay with those events,” says veteran SBS presenter Les Murray. “If a volleyball game goes for two hours, we don’t break away to go somewhere else. Seven is the primary broadcaster, which means they have first call, and in some cases, they may go to an event that we are already covering …”
… The crucial attraction for Australian viewers is the time zone, with Beijing just two hours behind Sydney. “I don’t think it could be any better,” says the executive producer of Seven’s coverage, Andy Kay. “There is actually nothing that a viewer will miss. They’ll go all day every day.” more@SMH

Thanks to correspondent Ryan for this video of one of the world’s best beach volleyball players getting drilled by a hard spike straight to his face. As a person who likes to feel the timber under my runners, I have 2 questions.
- What’s with the sympathy under the net?
- What’s with that catch and throw by the setter?
No correspondence with any beach fanatic will be entered into!

If you glance quickly at the FIVB web site, you tend to miss things. I don’t know how long these links have been on the page - it says new - but you can now look at the technical videos from the 2007 World Cup.

I get a bit of mail these days about volleyball - which is generally a good thing. Today I got this info from MediaSports.
The Puerto Rico Men’s Professional Volleyball League has just started, and you can watch the games FREE! and LIVE! at MediaSports. Price: FREE!!! Friday, July 18, 2008 1:00 am (GMT) (I make that 11am Saturday).
MediaSports seem to do a fair bit of South American volleyball - some is on a pay per view deal. I haven’t used it; so no guarantees. If you give them your email - they let you know when volleyball is being shown.
myp2p is also listing links to World League matches at the weekend - click on the Saturday and Sunday tags. You need to do a bit of reading about the set up on this site, and they don’t give you the final link until 5 hours before the match begins.
I would be interested to know if anyone has success, lack of success with these sites.

BEACH volleyballer Natalie Cook has seen how desperate China is to win gold at its Games, as players train with their partners on their shoulders.
The women doing the carrying are in squat position, with their leg muscles burning as if they have been doused in acid.
Cook says Australia’s secret weapon in Beijing is a school that the team has hired as a recovery centre. It will become available later this month when its students leave. “It is a place no other athletes can go to - hot and cold baths to make the blood pump through and get out the lactic acid and get us ready for the next day of competition,” she said. more @ courier mail ~ more @ herald sun

You can watch the scores tick over at the fivb Japan page
see comments on the Watch Aussies guys live on Saturday post below, and in other posts on matches, for more info. Also, it has been suggested that you can get the video at full screen size by using Magical Glass: http://www.sendspace.com/file/lp1l7p - I haven’t tried it; so at your own risk.Install the tool , start it and go to settings, after some testing this should work (won’t make it sharper, only bigger): Also see Cathy’s comment in comments>>
ANASTASI of ITALY says on the Italian National site: “The team is ready to face the battle with Australia on Tuesday that I think is the most important crossroads to be overcome on the road to the Games.”

Josh from Spike Magazine is interested in how you found the live game of the Aussies in Japan. Hit the comment>> tag below this post to let him know
So can everyone just write a quick recap on how they watched the game? I watched on Bet365 and it was a little jumpy but had sound, reasonable picture…. always seemed to focus on the Aussies at the timeout which was cool.
Did anyone use one of the Peer-to-Peer programs to watch the game and did that offer anything better?
Great start by the Aussies. They looked really sharp. Defence was particularly good. GO AUSSIES!

UPDATE 2:
It seems that the way to go is via Bet365. You only need to register and then you can view several links in good quality, and a bigger screen.
Register 1st: BET 365 English + UK ~ BET 365 Germany ~ BET 365 Italy
For main one, click the first link! (registration is free, click on top on Open Account). You have to enter a fair bit of personal detail (read the comments below), but you do not have to enter any credit cards etc. Just close this window. I have looked at the sample stream. It is good quality, a little bit stop start at first on Satellite. Working well using Firefox. It is a flash based system.
Then how to watch Games? After you have registered, go to the Bet365 site and On top, you see a Live Streaming option. Click on it! [
Live Streaming ]
Why I don’t see a TV icon? Some games are blocked for several countries. But be aware that Video stream get’s available a few minutes before the event starts. On the Live streaming page you can see which Events are on! But be aware: “Live video events may be restricted on a geographical basis.”
UPDATE 1:
I know I originally said Sunday - but the match is Saturday. An elderly citizen moment?

Our correspondent Cathy has alerted us to a site that will be showing the Aussies live. I have not used the site, and so I cannot vouch for it. But I’ll be giving it a shot on Saturday! There are several steps to take before you use the site, download a program etc, and get online at least 30 minutes before game time so that you buffer enough bandwidth to get a picture. Goodluck! You can get more info below:

If anyone has any additional information, or other links, that will help us to see the Aussies in action, then you can hit the comments>> tag at the bottom of this post and leave the details. Also from Cathy

The protest against FIVB proposed changes to rules that will restrict foreign players from competing overseas is growing. Aussie blogger Luke Campbell has been doing his bit. Friend Sandy at Bomberino reports that … around the pros, there are professional teams and players sporting t-shirts reading “Let Us Play!” in various languages
Sandy has video and links.

Over at the Spike Magazine site they have set up the Spike Game Centre. It has video, photos, stats and game wraps from the FIVB World Tour event in Adelaide. The centre features 17 games. It is missing footage for a few games, including the medal round, because of a camera issue. The guys at Spike are promising to have footage of those games up early next week.
As far as they know, there is nothing like the Game Centre anywhere else in the world. Check it out.
