Posted by devo on November 18, 2008

Luber’s Lounge reports that the Brandon University men’s volleyball team has come down softly on All-Canadian Paul Sanderson.  The Australian left-side will miss just one match after getting into a physical altercation with a teammate …  There had been speculation Sanderson might be suspended for the remainder of the semester. more

Luke Campbell hits the sand

Posted by devo on November 10, 2008

UPDATED: originally posted 9/11/08

I was really happy with most of my play throughout the day, getting a lot of points on serve and blocking and hitting reasonable well. However in the last 10 minutes of the final I struggled with my reception, passing the ball right to the net 5 times in a row making it really tough for Greg to set me (slipped back into indoor mode there!) - - - Luke,  get some tips from Phill! more

_________________

Aussie indoor centre player Luke Campbell is playing in the 1st leg of the Triple Crown on the Victorian Beach Tour at South Melbourne Beach in Melbourne today .

Over the last month or so I’ve been doing some training for beach and it certainly is a different sport to indoor, although a lot of skills do overlap. I must say I’m really excited to get out there with my partner Greg Dury and see how we will go as we haven’t trained or played together before. more

I’d love to hear from anyone who sees the big guy play. Does he make the transition? Certainly will be a big block.

Luke has decided to stay in Melbourne rather than head overseas again this year. I have decided to stay in Melbourne with my family and friends. The longer I have spent here the harder it is to leave such a vibrant city, and seeing my family and friends full time is something I have really missed over the past 10 years. more

Mt Lofty rightly “crows” about the AVL weekend

Posted by devo on November 10, 2008

Mt Lofty Community Sports Centre and Mt Lofty League Volleyball Club played host to four visiting teams from interstate for Round 3 of the Australian Volleyball League (AVL) Mens series 2008 on the weekend.

In usual Mt Lofty style, the venue and atmosphere was both electric and professional in every respect, with teams and spectators alike very complimentary about the way in which the round was delivered.

The Australian Volleyball Federation Events Manager, Susan Diver-Tuck, who was over to officiate the weekend, commented that, “Mt Lofty has set a very high standard in event presentation, and they are clearly the leaders so far this year in delivering AVL. I know that Queensland have taken some serious note of what they have experienced this weekend, in the hope of doing something similar in round 4 in Brisbane, which they will be hosting in 2 weeks time. Mt Lofty appeared to just take it in their stride, with years of experience and the history of a very passionate and dedicated club behind them, making sure the weekend ran error free.” Read the rest of this entry »

Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer into semis

Posted by devo on November 8, 2008

After winning a pair of matches on Friday at the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open, Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer became the first women’s team since 2000 from Australia to advance to a SWATCH FIVB World Tour “final four” without having either Natalie Cook or Kerri Pottharst as part of the partnership. more@fivb

On a day when all home players crashed out, the formidable Jennifer Boss and April Ross brushed off Nicole Branagh and Tyra Turner in the all-American battle to join Australians Tamsin Barnett and Becchara Palmer in the semi-finals of the US$175,000 Phuket Thailand Open at Karon Beach. more@fivb

Hunyadi

Posted by devo on November 7, 2008

I first saw Luke Hunyadi play as a junior.  One of the best junior setters that I have seen. ( Matty DeSalvo ranks 1, then Matt Young, then Shane Alexander and Luke close behind. BIAS? - Bulldust!) If the Volleyball Australia commentary tonight was anything to go by, Luke showed his class leading Adelaide to a win over UTSSU 3-1 in the 3rd round of the Men’s Australian Volleyball League.

Nicole into Pepperdine Hall of Fame

Posted by devo on November 6, 2008

Women’s Volleyball Olympian Nicole (Sanderson) Hannan traveled all the way from Australia to Pepperdine University to receive her award as a 2008 Hall of Fame inductee.

“Nicole traveled half-way around the world to convince me to pay for her education to play volleyball for the Waves,” said women’s head coach Nina Matthies. While at Pepperdine Hannan became one of the first players in history to earn All-West Coast Conference first team honors four times. She graduated from Pepperdine in 1997 with a degree in sports medicine. She competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics for her native Australia and finished fourth in Beach Volleyball. “I came to Pepperdine from the other side of the world and made new friends, family and teammates,” said Hannan. “Nina always believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.” more@pepperdine

FIVB World Beach Tour 2009 - where’s Adelaide?

Posted by edbinnie on November 6, 2008

The Provisional calendar for the 2009 World Tour has been set and released on the FIVB site.

To my surprise, there was no mention of Adelaide! There is hope in the article - “The calendar is subject to change by the FIVB, with decisions pending on a few double-gender events that need to confirm date and/or location.”

Maybe Adelaide is one of these?

http://www.fivb.org/viewPressRelease.asp?No=18280&Language=0

For those that were involved - playing, refereeing, working, or just watching - the 2008 event was fantastic. I know a huge amount of work went in behind the scenes, and it would be a shame if this all fell apart after 1 year.

So does anyone have an inkling as to what is going on?

Rumours abound last year’s event of heavy fines, poor ticket sales, needless to say the level of work required. Having run it once, I’d have thought that Year 2 should be significantly easier, and achieve better spectator volumes.

At the time, I thought it an “interesting” time to take on the new project, with a new WAVL, no MAVL, a new VTAW programme, large staff changes, and a new National Beach Tour Promoter and Sponsor. 2009 also offers its share of challenges, especially with still no definite details for the National Beach Tour - http://www.avf.org.au/index.php?id=774.

The Provisional National Tour Dates have a final event listed in Adelaide, hopefully gearing up to the World Tour, so let’s hope that the only reason for not mentioning it in the FIVB release is a date confirmation being required!!!

Men’s AVL Poll

Posted by devo on November 4, 2008

At the end of voting, both the AIS and the Queensland Pirates had firmed as your equal favourites (26%) to win the Men’s Australian Volleyball League for 2008.

We are all awaiting the next round where the top 3 teams, including UTSSU (19%) will play against each other. Will UTSSU show that they should be one of the favourites? Were the AIS suffering “Bali Bellie” and jet lag in Melbourne? Will the Pirates rip the national title away from the AIS?

I’ll have another poll up so that you can change your vote. Or have you already seen enough to confirm your previous vote.

See the vote results here.

Mens’ AVL round 2

Posted by devo on October 24, 2008

UPDATED 26 Oct:

You can now see all the results from the weekeend’s round 2 matches here

Melbourne Blues and WA share the top of the ladder with 5 wins from 8 matches. However, Queensland Pirates and UTSSU, who did not play this weekend, are in 3rd and 4th spots with 4 wins from 4 games, and are most likely to progess quickly up the ladder next round. The surprise has been the AIS, who sit on the bottom of the ladder with only 1 win from 3 matches. Training should be “interesting” at the AIS this week.

In our poll (left hand column) the punters still have the AIS to win this competition (30%) from Pirates (26%). It will be interesting to see if the AIS still maintain that position after this weekend’s results.

Men’s AVL round 2 is underway in Melbourne this weekend. Uni Blues defeated Adelaide in the first match tonight 3-1.

You can follow the matches on the Volleyball Australia site, and on the AVL page.

Become involved with the Australian Junior Program

Posted by devo on October 23, 2008

Dear Coach,

In my role with the Australian Volleyball Federation as the Mens’ Volleyball Development Coach, I have been asked countless times as to how coaches can become involved with the Australian Junior Program and its related camps and tours. This is your opportunity to observe some of Australia’s elite coaches in a development camp setting as well as learn more about the Australian Junior Program and the way the program operates, with a view at becoming more involved in the future.

I would like to call for expressions of interest to attend the 2008 National Junior Program December Training Camp in Bendigo, December 12 – 18, for male athletes immediately after the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. If you would like to attend the camp, please contact me  by the close of business on Friday, 31 October via email to bensons@ausport.gov.au with the subject: EOI – Junior Program December Camp.

The associated levy for the camp is $500 and covers the cost of travel to-and-from the camp itself from Melbourne, as well as meals and accommodation provided by the camp organizer.  However, it is expected that coaches from interstate make their own travel arrangements to-and-from Melbourne for the camp in Bendigo.  More details will be provided to coaches who are nominated to attend.

Steve Benson
AVF Men’s Development Coach
**Please note that your expression of interest does not guarantee a place at the camp, due to limited spaces.

I have set up the blog to re-post these links on October 1st, (originally posted 14/09/08) but it would be a good idea to bookmark these links now if you want to follow the results.

Australia finish 4th in Viet Nam Cup

Posted by devo on September 15, 2008

Defending champions Vietnam easily defeated Australia 3-0 to win the bronze medal at the VTV International Women’s Volleyball Tournament - Mobifone Cup yesterday in the southern city of Can Tho.

The game played like a repeat performance of last week win over the Kangaroo rat side 3-0 in the qualifying round last week.

Vietnam, who lost to North Korea in the semi-final last Saturday, dominated their opponents, winning 25-12, 25-13, 25- 17.

Fans of the home side shook up the visitors with strong vocal support, and the atmosphere was dynamite as the Vietnamese players took the lead early in the first half.

Under new head coach Luong Khuong Thuong, the team played an attacking game with spikers Le Thi Muoi, Nguyen Thi Ngoc Hoa, Bui Thi Hue and Pham Thi Yen filling the score board.

Australia played decisively in the first minutes of the second half to level the score, but lost in the second set.

The Kangaroo rat players tried their best to retake the advantage in the third set but failed.

Vietnam Captain Yen played an exciting game after having returned to the national team after one year because of injury, and her team-mate Muoi showed that their skills were sharp enough to bring Vietnam to a win.

In the final match yesterday, North Korea beat Kazakhstan 3-1 to take the cup and the US$5,000 prize money. Runners-up pocketed $3,000 and $2,000 respectively. Viet Nam Net article
