Posted by devo on September 7, 2008

The Australian pairing (and number 3 seeds) avoided the second upset of the day - the Brazillians lost earlier. Fiji to play in AVL finals

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

UPDATED: ORIGINALLY POSTED 22/07/08
The Fijian women’s team is heading to Australia. They will be competing against teams in Sydney as part of their preparations for the FIVB World Championship qualifiers in Japan next year. While in Australia, the side will compete in the Australian Volleyball League finals this coming weekend.

“Australian Volleyball Federation invited us after we enquired about our possible inclusion in the tournament,” Maraiwai said. “We will be the only international team and apart from competing, we will play warm-up matches against top clubs from Sydney. It’s all part of getting the players exposed to top level volleyball.”

The side is a young one with the average age of 21. Seven of the players were part of the 2007 South Pacific Games while the remaining eight are rookies. “It’s a very young team. Most of the girls have been around the scene after leaving high school,” Maraiwai said. “The most experienced player would be Claire Delai, who has been around since 2003.”  more@FijiTimes ~ more@FijiTimes2 ~ FijiDailyPost

The Uriate boy

Posted by devo on August 25, 2007

Did you play with or against Nicolas Uriarte when he was in the ACT? The young Argentinian, son of John Uriarte who coached VTAM and at the AIS, is setting fantastically at the Boys Youth World Championships.

Meanwhile, the high-spirited Argentina side is enjoying increasing confidence and is definitely a team for the future. In the first round they beat USA and defending champion Russia, and despite their only loss against China, the boys of Juan Cichello are now capable of pulling off a victory against the fast Asian team. Argentina, fourth in the past Youth WCH 2005, will play their very first match for the gold medal if they have success in winning China. Their more productive players are Facundo Conte, Rodrigo Ronda and Pablo Hruby, while the setter Nicolas Uriarte is the best of the tournament so far. fivb more

Barsouk-Kolodinsky RUS [6] lost to Rogers-Dalhausser USA [4] 0-2 (16-21, 14-21)

Gstaad, Switzerland, July 29, 2007 - Andrew Schacht and Joshua Slack ended Brazil’s run of men’s medals at the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships as the Australians upset top-ranked Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos here Sunday afternoon before a jammed-packed crowd of 7,000 Beach Volleyball fans for the bronze medal match.

With their 21-17 and 21-19 win in 42 minutes, Schacht and Slack also became the first Australian men’s team to medal at the world championships as the Athens 2004 Olympians collected their biggest payday on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour with $US$35,000 for the third-place finish.

“It is a great day now,” said the 30-year old Slack, “especially after we played so poorly in the morning semi-finals against the Russians. We have been playing together for a long-time now, so today’s medal really is a result of a lot of hard work. And, this finish comes in the biggest event in our sport outside of the Olympics.” more at the fivb site
