Dave over at Volleyball Base asks why older experienced teams are so successful?

Check out some of the stats from last years World Cup ~ The Older…The Better? A lot of the teams that had success were fairly old. Although older players may not be at their physical peak, volleyball has a high skill demand, which takes many years to develop, meaning maybe old players are quite valuable? more@VolleyballBase

Fiji one player short

Posted by devo on July 23, 2008

The Fijian volleyball team travelling to Australia to play in this weekend’s AVL finals will be leaving one of its team members behind in Fiji. FijiVillage.com reports:

A top women’s Fiji volleyball player was denied a visa this morning to travel to Australia for the buildup matches to next year’s World Cup qualifiers.

Ana Vuniwaqa, who was part of Fiji’s silver medal team in last year’s Pacific Games in Samoa, will miss the trip because of her links to a high ranking officer in the Fiji Military Force. Fiji volleyball team coach Varanisese Maraiwai said now they will only be taking 14 players on the 10 day tour.

The Fiji Women’s Volleyball team has for the first time ever got an opportunity to compete in the World Cup qualification tournament, which will be in Japan next year. The 14-member squad will depart tomorrow morning (Thursday) for Australia. more@FijiVillage

Men’s World Cup - 3 days to go

Posted by devo on November 29, 2007

Today is the second of 2 rest days, with competition resuming tomorrow.

The Aussies will face Spain, Puerto Rico and Egypt. All three are winnable games for the Aussies if they have recovered both physically and mentally from the gruelling last round. It’s a young team with a good future and we need to keep our heads at this point and continue to work for some improvement.” more

Posted by devo on November 26, 2007

UPDATE 3: originally posted 26/11/07 @ 7.23

Aussie coach: They taught us a lesson

Head coach Russell Borgeaud: Bulgaria played a very good game and gave us a volleyball lesson today. They have very strong players and our players were not up to the task today. We clearly need to improve our game and our results.

Captain Benjamin Hardy: There were moments when we played well, but it wasn’t one of our best performances. Bulgaria played well and were aggressive. It’s never nice to play poorly at the end of the match like we did today.

Match comment:
Volleyball Team Australia played the current World and Olympic champions (the #1 ranked team in the world), Brazil, in their sixth match of the 2007 World Cup, in Okayama this afternoon. Some areas in the match were very close statistically, between the two teams. The two teams had identical passing figures and attack error percentage figures (just 11%), but the Brazilians were a good margin ahead on attack kill percentage and also on serve proficiency.
