Brazil miss the podium! USA takes gold.
For the first time ever in the FIVB World League history, the USA jumped on the highest step of the podium. The Americans are the sixth team in the 19 years of World League to win the competition, after the Italian and Brazilian domination. Serbia conquered the silver medal after losing the final 3-1. Russia gained the bronze, thanks to their 3-1 victory against Brazil. The host country of the Final Round didn’t manage to access the podium, after 7 gold medals, two silver and 4 bronze. The FIVB’s flagship annual Men’s competition closed this year assigning more than USD 20 million in Prize Money. Another joy came for the USA team with the MVP prize, awarded to Lloy Ball (also best setter of the Final Round). more@fivb ~ more@WorldLeague ~ more@Zorzi

The World League finals begin today in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will continue for the next 5 days. Brazil are looking for their sixth successive gold medal and joint-record eighth overall gold medal in 19 World Leagues. The Brazilians and eight-time winners Italy - not qualified for this final round - have taken part in every World League since the start of the competition.
With the Olympics around the corner, the competition here will be fierce.

I get a bit of mail these days about volleyball - which is generally a good thing. Today I got this info from MediaSports.
The Puerto Rico Men’s Professional Volleyball League has just started, and you can watch the games FREE! and LIVE! at MediaSports. Price: FREE!!! Friday, July 18, 2008 1:00 am (GMT) (I make that 11am Saturday).
MediaSports seem to do a fair bit of South American volleyball - some is on a pay per view deal. I haven’t used it; so no guarantees. If you give them your email - they let you know when volleyball is being shown.
myp2p is also listing links to World League matches at the weekend - click on the Saturday and Sunday tags. You need to do a bit of reading about the set up on this site, and they don’t give you the final link until 5 hours before the match begins.
I would be interested to know if anyone has success, lack of success with these sites.

The sixth and final weekend of intercontinental round action in the 2008 FIVB World League is on this weekend, with two berths still to be decided for the final round in Rio de Janeiro.
The World League, the FIVB’s annual men’s competition, started in 1990, and in this year’s 19th edition teams are competing for more than USD 20 million in prize money. The intercontinental rounds are divided into 4 pools.
So who will be in the finals? Host Brazil, Pool B winner Russia, Pool C winner USA and FIVB wild card Japan are all confirmed for the July 23-27 matches. France and Serbia are battling it out for the qualifying place behind Brazil in Pool A, while Poland need to stay ahead of China in Pool D to clinch their place.
You can check out the pool results here@FIVB.
The “wildcard” position in the final has been allocated to Japan. They are currently last in their pool. So why did they get the wild card? Japan guarantees very good television coverage! fivb

Volleyball Canada has just lost some major government funding which will affect its ability to compete in World League next year. As the Aussie Women’s program knows only too well, government funding is crucial to success for minor sports trying to compete against the volleyball powerhouses of Europe and South America.
Canadian blog Bomberino directs its readers to two articles on the funding decision. The Volleyball Canada release is interesting as it details the costs of being involved in World League; the Friesen article puts the “how do you do it without the funding” argument. If you are successful - you get funding. But how are you going to be successful without funding.
It sounds so very Australian sport. And reinforces the knife edge that the Aussie men’s program is on. They can’t afford to fail.

Volleyball is a business - big business. And if you want to play with the big boys in World League then you had better have your business plan well and truly worked out. Number one item on your agenda - television rights and attendance figures. Not the coach; not the players; not the training regime.
… the World League 2007, which had more than 2000 televised hours and an 18% increase in attendance … From 2009, the countries that have the lowest numbers of attendance will be replaced in the World League competition by new Federations satisfying the TV and Marketing conditions requested by the FIVB … Since Argentina has not yet presented a TV contract, the European Champion Spain was admitted … The request coming from Italy was not accepted because the Federation did not provide a signed contract with a broadcaster. see the full FIVB release

The FIVB’s premier annual international men’s competition, the FIVB World League, gets under way this weekend with the first of six intercontinental rounds. Each of the 16 teams vying for a share of the over USD 20 million prize money and a place in the finals in Katowice, Poland, from 11th to 15th July will play three rounds at home and three away, each round consisting of two matches against the same team on separate days over the same weekend. more at FIVB volleyball
You can get all the info for this tournament at the FIVB site, including live scores, current ladders, match comments, post match interviews, and pictures. This is fantastic.
Compare this to the Asian Youth Championships. The hosts Malaysia have no results on their web site. This should be a condition of hosting this event! The Asian Volleyball Confederation are a day behind, 2 days on the concluding weekend. Australia is several days behind. To find out how our Aussie lads are going, you have to rely on the Iranian Volleyball site (thankyou), or wait till 10am the next day when the internet news sites update. Not good enough!
