I found this picture following up on the German results from last weekend. Okay, the German Bundesliga doesn’t get 7700 spectators at every match, every week. A thousand is more likely the number of fans that will turn up.
The only time I have seen decent numbers at a volleyball game in Australia, outside of the Olympics, has been at international matches in Melbourne. At the Glasshouse many years ago, and recently at Dandenong in the Argentine series.
But unless this is the aim for volleyball in Australia, to get numbers to the games, we’re just kidding ourselves. There is an audience. Volleyball Victoria proved this with the Argentine series. The question is: how do we grow that audience, and maintain it. More international matches, properly promoted, would be a good start.
I remember vividly watching the first round of the new Women’s AVL that was played in Dandenong. Junior basketball was being played in the other half of the stadium. A basketball mum sat down beside me and watched for a few minutes. She asked me what the competition was. “Is the volleyball always of this standard here?” I explained the differing levels that you are likely to see at Dandenong. At the end of the set she went and dragged some of her friends into the volleyball game. I wonder what would have happened if I could have said that the AVL was here every week. There is an audience out there.
Berlin’s Max-Schmeling-Halle, where 7700 fans witnessed the the top of the table game between VfB and the SCC Berlin this last weekend.

Phillip DeSalvo - Eltmann
The new German men’s national team coach, Raúl Lozano from Argentina, gave the Aussies the thumbs up when he visited his first National League match this week.
After complaining that too many foreigners playing were “not genuine service providers“, he specifically excluded Brett Alderman – “good player” - and “above all Libero Phill DeSalvo … it harms that DeSalvo is Australian, I would gladly have him,” said Lozano.
To which DeSalvo commented modestly: “That was certainly a game, with which I was very content. But my team made it easy for me to look good. “ computer translation here

Rhiannon Watt
I want my volleyball skills to improve and as a player to mature. It is a great experience to be able to play at such high level. The competition is strong. This means that we must give everything and the best of it.
It was, in the beginning, a little frightening in a foreign country, but the support of the team and the management was simply overwhelming.

Dubai is a great opportunity for us to play against some awesome teams that we don’t really get much of a chance to do. One of them being Germany! I know we are going to move forward during this tournament and it is going to be a really positive step for us. more

Our friend Kasper reports:
I just read about the German men’s All-star match. It seems that Australian Steve Keir was named “spiking champion” after the spiking contest, where a jury of five voted for the hardest and most spectacular spikes.
In the main event, a match of North against South, he was also in the winning team, South.

Up front – my German is terrible. My computer translator doesn’t do a great job on German. But …
It appears that Steve Keir’s German club side TSV Unterhaching was playing in the Challenge Cup. They lost the first match 0-3. They then sacked the captain for under performance, or released him from his playing responsibilities until further notice. They appointed Steve captain. The team won 3-0. “New acquisition Steve Keir played his role as new captain and diagonal aggressor outstandingly: 24 points – that is world class“
They play the golden set in some European Cup competitions that are played home and away. Instead of a count back on sets, they wait 30 minutes and play the golden set. TSV Unterhaching won this 15-12 and progress in the tournament. I wonder who will be captain in the next match?
Thanks to Mark Lebedew for the heads up on this one and help with the translation. In German ~ translated
